Brenda stood on the bottom step of the staircase with her hands clenched into tiny tight fists.

She looked back and forth between David's dark glare and Maya's firm standing posture nearby.

"You think you can just throw me out into the street like trash?" Brenda shrieked madly.

"I spent a full year of my life trying to fix up this old dusty house!"

"You spent my hard-earned money buying expensive designer clothes for yourself," David corrected her firmly.

"And you treated my late wife's memory with absolute disrespect every single chance you got."

Brenda marched down the steps and stomped her heavy boots against the shiny mahogany floor.

She grabbed a fancy glass vase from the entryway table and held it high above her head.

"If I cannot have this life, then I will destroy everything inside it!" Brenda threatened loudly.

David stepped directly in front of Maya and covered his young daughter with his heavy frame.

"Put that expensive vase down immediately, Brenda," David commanded with a deep steady voice.

"If you break a single piece of property, you will face immediate criminal charges tonight."

Brenda's arm shook with wild rage as she stared into David's absolute fearless dark eyes.

She realized that throwing a temper tantrum would only land her behind heavy iron bars.

With a loud scream of deep frustration, she slammed the glass vase back down onto the table.

The heavy glass cracked along the bottom edge, sending a tiny spiderweb split through the base.

"You two deserve each other!" Brenda spat out as she turned toward the grand staircase fast.

"I am going to pack my things and call my high-priced divorce lawyer right now!"

"Go right ahead and make that call," David called out after her as she ran upstairs.

"My legal team has already sent him the security camera video footage thirty minutes ago."

Brenda stopped on the top landing for a second as her face lost all remaining color again.

She stomped down the long upper hallway and slammed the master bedroom door with massive force.

The heavy sound echoed through the high ceilings of the house, shaking the small wall pictures.

David turned around and kneeled down on the floor right in front of his tired young daughter.

He reached out and took Maya's cold dirty hands into his own warm steady hands gently.

"I am so sorry I was not here to protect you sooner, sweetheart," David said softly.

"I never should have trusted that woman to stay here with you while I was away."

Maya wiped away a final tear and squeezed her father's thumbs with all her strength back.

"I was so scared you had changed your mind about me, Dad," Maya whispered through tears.

"She told me that you wanted a totally fresh start without any old family around."

David shook his head firmly and pulled Maya into a tight warm hug right in the hall.

"You are my entire world, Maya, and nothing will ever change that simple truth," David said.

"Your mother built this life with me, and everything I own belongs to you completely."

Upstairs, the loud sound of closet doors opening and heavy suitcases dragging filled the quiet house.

Brenda was frantically throwing her expensive dresses into large black bags to leave fast now.

She knew that if the local sheriff arrived, her public shame would be ten times worse.

David stood back up and walked over to the open front door to check on the driveway.

A white private security vehicle was pulling up to the curb with two officers sitting inside.

David had called them five minutes before arriving home to ensure a completely smooth process today.

The nightmare that had started on the chilly porch was finally coming to a decisive end.
