Chapter 5 of 6
She Tore The Cheap Necklace Off Until Realizing The Truth
Facing The Real Enemy
The very next morning, the heavy rain tapped against the high glass windows of the Sterling Estate as a dark sedan pulled up. Richard Vance stepped out of the luxury car, wearing a sharp grey suit and carrying a leather briefcase filled with contract papers. He had received an urgent call from Victoria asking him to come over immediately to finalize a major property transfer. Richard smiled to himself as he walked up the front steps, thinking he was finally going to take control of the estate. He had no idea that the lost child he had hidden away twenty-two years ago was standing inside the front hall.
Richard stepped through the front doors, wiping his shoes on the mat while adjusting his expensive silk tie with smug confidence. He walked into the main drawing room where Victoria was sitting at her desk, looking calm, sharp, and completely composed. Julian stood by the fireplace, his arms crossed over his chest with a stern look that Richard had never seen before. Sitting in a large armchair next to Victoria was Maya, dressed in a simple white blouse and holding a thick manila folder. Richard paused for a second, feeling an unexpected wave of unease as he looked at the young woman's face.
Richard: Victoria, good morning. I brought the final property settlement documents as you requested.
Victoria: Put the papers on the desk, Richard. But you won't be signing any contracts today.
Richard: What is this about? Who is this young girl sitting in your private room?
Julian: She is my twin sister, Richard. The one you stole from the hospital.
Richard: That is ridiculous! That baby died twenty-two years ago! You have no proof of such nonsense!
Maya stood up from her chair and slowly walked toward Richard, holding out her open hand for him to see clearly. Lying in her palm were the two halves of the jade pendant, fitted together perfectly with the Sterling family crest exposed. Behind her, two city police detectives stepped out from the side hallway, holding an official warrant for Richard's arrest. Victoria had spent the entire night working with her top attorneys to pull up the old hospital records and transaction logs. They had found the bank wire transfers Richard had made to the corrupt nurse back in the winter of nineteen ninety-nine.
Richard's face drained of all color as the lead detective stepped forward and placed heavy iron handcuffs around his wrists. The smug smile he had carried for twenty years completely vanished as he realized his decades of deceit were over. The detectives read him his rights and led him out of the grand estate into the pouring rain waiting outside. Julian closed the heavy front door behind them, letting out a long breath of relief that filled the warm entrance hall. For the first time in twenty-two years, the dark shadow hanging over the Sterling family was finally gone for good.
