Chapter 4 of 6
She Tore The Cheap Necklace Off Until Realizing The Truth
Uncovering The Family Truth
Victoria stood up and turned toward the crowd of wealthy guests who were still standing around watching the dramatic scene unfold. With a firm, commanding voice that left no room for debate, she ordered her staff to clear the grand ballroom immediately. The guests quickly shuffled toward the front doors, whispering nervously about the shocking revelation they had just witnessed firsthand. Julian helped Maya stand up, keeping his arm wrapped tightly around her waist to support her as her legs felt weak. They walked slowly up the wide marble staircase toward Victoria's private study at the end of the second-floor hallway.
The study was a massive room filled with dark mahogany bookshelves, heavy velvet curtains, and large framed portraits of ancestors. Victoria closed the thick wooden doors behind them, locking out the noise of the departing guests and servants down below. She walked over to a safe hidden behind a painting on the wall, her hands still shaking as she entered the code. She pulled out an old metal box containing faded hospital papers, legal documents, and old police reports from two decades ago. She placed the box on the central desk and gestured for Maya and Julian to take a seat on the leather sofa.
Maya sat down nervously, clutching the broken pieces of jade tightly in her coat pocket while looking at the old documents. Victoria sat across from her, her face filled with deep sorrow and regret as she opened the thick yellowed folder. She began to explain the dark history of the Sterling family business and how her former partner had tried to ruin her. The partner had hired a corrupt hospital worker to declare the female twin deceased shortly after the emergency delivery took place. That man had taken the baby to a distant state, leaving her at an anonymous intake center with only her half of the jade stone.
Victoria: I signed away millions in legal settlements back then, thinking it would bring peace to my broken heart.
Maya: I spent my entire life moving between six different foster homes because nobody wanted me.
Victoria: If I had known... I would have spent every single dollar I owned to find you!
Julian: Who was the partner, Mother? Is he still alive today?
Victoria: It was Richard Vance... the man who set up your trust fund lawyer.
Julian's eyes went wide as he realized that the man who had stolen his sister was still connected to their business network. Richard Vance was a powerful land investor who had been trying to buy out the Sterling family estate for years. He had used the old tragedy to keep Victoria distracted, weak, and constantly focused on fighting off fake legal claims. Maya listened to the story, feeling the heavy burden of twenty-two lost years weighing down on her shoulders. She looked at the woman who was her mother, seeing not a rich snob, but a damaged soul who had been tricked.
Victoria leaned across the desk, her eyes filled with desperate tears as she looked straight into Maya's eyes with total humility. She reached out slowly, resting her soft hand over Maya's rough, work-worn fingers that showed years of hard labor at diners. She knew that money, mansions, and expensive gifts could never make up for the lonely childhood her daughter had endured alone. But she was determined to use every resource she had left to fix the terrible mistake and bring full justice to light. She promised to rewrite her total estate plan tomorrow and put Richard Vance behind bars forever.
