Chapter 2 of 6
She Tore The Cheap Necklace Off Until Realizing The Truth
The Broken Jade Pendant
Victoria stood completely frozen in place, her eyes wide with total shock as she stared down at the split pieces on the floor. Carved into the flat inner surface of the broken jade was a hidden symbol that had been invisible from the outside view. It was an intricate crest of two intertwined swans above a small carved date that had been etched decades ago. Victoria's breathing became shallow and fast as her mind rushed back twenty years to a rainy night she had tried to forget. Her hand slowly moved up to her own neck, where a matching jade pendant hung beneath her dark satin collar.
Maya was sobbing quietly on the floor, trying to gather the tiny fragments of silver chain into her trembling hands. She did not care about the rich guests watching her or the ruined front of her red dress anymore. That simple pendant was the only item her biological mother had left in her baby blanket at the hospital intake center. For twenty-two years, she had worn it every single day as a promise that she might find her real family again. Now, seeing it snapped in half on the cold stone floor felt like her final connection to her past was gone forever.
Julian rushed through the crowd of shocked guests, pushing his way past his business associates to reach the center of the hall. He had been in the side study talking with his tax attorney about his trust fund when he heard the commotion. When he saw Maya kneeling on the floor in tears with a torn dress, a wave of deep anger hit his chest. He immediately dropped down beside her, wrapping his jacket around her cold shoulders to cover the tear in her dress. He looked up at his mother with sharp, furious eyes, ready to defend the woman he secretly loved.
Julian: Mother, what is happening here?! What did you do to her?
Victoria: No... it cannot be true... this crest...
Julian: You humiliated her in front of everyone! Have you lost your mind?
Maya: Julian, my necklace... she broke my mother's necklace...
Julian: I am so sorry, Maya. I should have stayed by your side tonight.
Victoria did not answer her son's angry questions because her knees suddenly felt too weak to support her heavy weight. She collapsed onto her knees right on the hard floor, completely unconcerned about her expensive satin gown or her formal posture. Her trembling hands reached down toward one half of the broken jade stone, her fingers shaking so hard she almost dropped it. She lifted the smooth green piece close to her eyes, confirming the carved symbol with her own tear-filled gaze. She then unclasped her own identical necklace with numb fingers and brought the two separate stones side by side.
When Victoria pressed her original pendant against the half that had just broken off Maya's neck, they clicked together with precision. The two curved pieces formed a single, complete oval jade stone, revealing that they had once been carved from the exact same rock. The inner crest on both halves lined up seamlessly, matching the private family seal that only her late husband had ever commissioned. Victoria let out a broken gasp that turned into a heavy sob, the cold mask of wealth completely slipping away. The surrounding guests whispered in confusion, completely unable to understand why the proud woman was weeping on the floor.
