Chapter 3 of 6
She Tore The Cheap Necklace Off Until Realizing The Truth
A Secret Kept For Years
The entire ballroom fell into a stunned silence as Victoria clutched both pieces of jade tightly against her chest. Tears washed away her heavy makeup, leaving dark streaks down her pale face as she looked up at Maya. The young woman she had just called cheap trash was looking back at her with confused, tearful eyes from beneath Julian's jacket. Victoria reached out one trembling hand toward Maya's face, her voice cracking with an intense emotional pain that nobody had ever heard. The cold, powerful matriarch of the Sterling family looked completely broken in front of all her high society friends.
Victoria: My daughter... my beautiful baby girl...
Maya: What... what are you talking about? I don't understand.
Julian: Mother, stop this right now. You are confusing her!
Victoria: Look at the stone, Julian! Look at what she has been wearing around her neck!
Maya: That was left with me at the hospital when I was an infant.
Victoria gently placed the matched pieces into Maya's open palm so the young girl could see the carved crest for herself. Twenty-two years ago, Victoria had given birth to twin babies during a terrible storm while staying at a remote country hospital. Her corrupt former business partner had bribed a nurse to steal one of the newborns to force a settlement. Victoria was told her baby girl had died at birth, a lie that had broken her heart and changed her forever. She had spent two decades building a cold, hard wall around her heart, focusing entirely on wealth, estate holdings, and business success.
Julian leaned closer to inspect the matched stones resting in Maya's palm, his jaw dropping in absolute disbelief as he saw the seal. He recognized the swan crest immediately because it was carved into the heavy wooden doors of their family home and written on their will. He looked from his mother's emotional face to Maya's confused expression, suddenly seeing the unmistakable physical resemblance between them. They shared the exact same almond-shaped brown eyes, the same high cheekbones, and the exact same small curve of the chin. The woman he had brought to the house as a diner waitress was actually his lost twin sister.
Maya stared down at the two halves of jade sitting together in her hand, her mind struggling to process the sudden revelation. All her life, she had grown up in foster homes, moving from one temporary house to another without any sense of belonging. She had worked long shifts at cheap diners, saved every penny, and wondered why her real parents had abandoned her. To learn that her mother had never abandoned her, but had been lied to, turned her whole world upside down. She looked at Victoria's tear-stained face, feeling a strange mixture of old anger and overwhelming sadness.
Victoria: I looked for you for years... I never knew you were alive!
Maya: But you just tore my dress and called me trash!
Victoria: I was blind and cruel! I can never forgive myself for what I just did to you!
Julian: We need to get out of this room right now.
Victoria: Yes... please come upstairs with me. Everyone else, leave my house immediately!
