She Tore The Cheap Necklace Off Until Realizing The Truth

The Torn Red Silk Dress

The grand ballroom of the Sterling Estate was filled with bright lights, expensive flowers, and dozens of wealthy guests in fine suits and dresses. Victoria Sterling stood near the main staircase, holding a crystal glass while checking her golden watch every few minutes. Tonight was supposed to be the most important evening of her life because her son Julian was announcing his engagement to a wealthy heiress. She wanted everything to look completely perfect, from the white orchids on the tables to the soft music played by the string quartet. But then she noticed a young woman standing near the dessert table wearing a bright red silk dress that looked completely out of place.

Maya stood quietly by the edge of the room, feeling uncomfortable in her simple red dress that she had bought at a thrift store. She had spent two weeks saving her tips from the local diner just to afford the bus ticket and the modest outfit for this party. Julian had invited her as his special guest, though he had not told his powerful mother that they were seeing each other. Maya held a small cup of water, watching the wealthy families talk about their overseas properties, foreign trips, and large bank accounts. She felt like a total stranger among these people, but she loved Julian and wanted to support him on his big night.

Victoria walked across the polished marble floor toward Maya, her expensive heels making a sharp clicking noise with every single step. Her eyes locked onto the simple jade pendant hanging around Maya's neck, hanging from a thin silver chain that looked worn down by time. To Victoria, that piece of jade looked cheap, old, and completely inappropriate for a high society gathering at her luxury estate. She felt an sudden rush of anger that an uninvited girl from outside their social circle was standing in her main hall wearing common junk. She stepped directly into Maya's personal space, casting a tall shadow over the smaller girl while pointing her long finger.

Victoria: Who invited you into my home, and why are you wearing that tacky thing?

Maya: Julian invited me, ma'am. I am so sorry if I am standing in the wrong spot.

Victoria: You do not belong in this room, and that terrible stone is an insult to my house.

Maya: Please, this pendant belonged to my real mother before I was placed into foster care.

Victoria: I do not care about your sob story or your fake trinkets.

Maya reached up to cover the green stone with her hand, trying to protect the only memory she owned from her childhood. Victoria's face turned red with rage as she stepped closer, reaching out her hand to grab the silver chain by force. Maya tried to pull away, but Victoria grabbed the jade stone and pulled it down with all her strength. The thin fabric of Maya's red dress tore down the front with a loud ripping sound that made several guests turn around. The force of the pull snapped the silver chain completely, sending the green jade pendant falling through the air toward the floor.

The heavy piece of jade slammed against the hard white marble with a sharp thud that seemed to echo across the whole room. It broke directly down the middle, splitting into two distinct curved pieces that rolled across the polished floor toward Victoria's shoes. Maya dropped to her knees, tears instantly spilling over her cheeks as she reached for the broken pieces of her beloved keepsake. Victoria looked down at the broken stone with a cold smile, preparing to call security to escort the girl out. But as her eyes focused on the exposed inside edge of the stone, her entire face went completely pale.
