Chapter 5 of 6

My Stepmother Burned My Bag Until A Photo Dropped Out

Searching For The Lost Child

Later that afternoon, Clara and Evelyn sat in the quiet office of a private family investigator who specialized in open adoption records. The room was warm, filled with soft sunlight streaming through the windows, a stark contrast to the cold patio from the night before. The investigator, a kind woman named Sarah, reviewed the old adoption file that Evelyn had kept hidden in her designer pouch for six long years. Sarah smiled gently as she typed information into her secure database, cross-referencing names and dates.

Sarah: The paperwork your father signed was strict, but because you were an adult, your consent was technically required.

Evelyn: I was nineteen and terrified, Sarah. My father told me I had no choice if I wanted a future.

Clara: My late husband was wrong to force her, Sarah. I want to pay whatever it costs to fix this.

Sarah: The good news is that the adoptive parents filed an open-contact agreement three years ago, hoping the birth mother would look for them.

Evelyn's heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat as she leaned forward in her chair. For six painful years, she had believed that her baby girl was completely lost to her forever, hidden behind locked court records and legal walls. Clara reached over and gently took Evelyn's hand, squeezing it tight to give her strength in the overwhelming moment. The old bitterness between the two women was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, shared determination to make things right.

Evelyn: They... they wanted me to find her? They didn't lock the records?

Sarah: Not at all. They live just two hours away in Oregon, and they have been waiting for your call.

Clara: Can we drive there today? We can leave right now if they are open to meeting us.

Sarah: I will place the official call right now to confirm, but I am very confident they will welcome you.

Sarah picked up her desk phone and dialed the number listed on the confidential registry file while Evelyn and Clara held their breath. Within minutes, Sarah was speaking to a warm female voice on the speakerphone, explaining that Evelyn was sitting in her office ready to reconnect. The voice on the other end gasped with joy, explaining how they had always told the little girl about her brave biological mother. Tears spilled down Evelyn's cheeks, but this time they were tears of pure, unmapped happiness.

Adoptive Mother: We would love for you to come visit, Evelyn. Lily has your bright smile and your blonde hair.

Evelyn: Her name is Lily? That... that is the most beautiful name I have ever heard.

Clara: We will be there by dinner time. Thank you so much for keeping her heart open to us.
