Chapter 1 of 6
My Stepmother Burned My Bag Until A Photo Dropped Out
The Fire On The Deck
The night air was freezing on the back patio, but the stone fire pit roared with orange flames. Evelyn stood near the edge, her hands trembling as she held the strap of her small leather pouch. Her stepmother, Clara, stood opposite her with a face carved out of pure stone. Clara had always hated Evelyn, ever since Evelyn's father passed away and left behind a large estate. For months, Clara believed Evelyn had stolen a hidden envelope containing cash and important property papers from the family safe.
Clara: Hand it over right now, Evelyn. I know that pouch contains the stolen money.
Evelyn: I told you a hundred times, Clara, I never touched Dad's legal papers or his cash.
Clara: You are a liar just like your mother was, and I will burn everything you own before I let you enjoy his fortune.
Evelyn pulled the pouch close to her chest, her knuckles turning white under the patio lights. She had stayed at the family home only to settle her father's final bills and pay off the remaining mortgage. But Clara was convinced that Evelyn was trying to cheat her out of her rightful share of the life insurance payout. Clara snatched a heavy iron poker from beside the pit and stepped closer with a cruel glint in her eyes.
Evelyn: Stand back! You have no right to touch my personal belongings!
Clara: I have every right in this house! Give me that bag or I will throw it into the flames myself!
Clara lunged forward, grabbing the corner of the designer pouch with a sudden burst of strength. Evelyn gasped and pulled back, but Clara leaned her full weight into the struggle, dragging the pouch dangerously close to the fire pit. The heat radiated against Evelyn's cheeks as the tip of the leather scorched against the glowing embers. Evelyn cried out, her eyes wide with total panic as she tried to twist the strap away from Clara's grip.
Evelyn: Stop! Don't burn it!
Clara: Let go! You don't deserve a single dollar from this family estate!
They wrestled back and forth right over the roaring flames, grunting with effort as the fabric strained. Clara gave one final, harsh jerk, attempting to shove the entire pouch straight down into the burning wood. But Evelyn yanked sideways with all her strength, causing Clara to slip on the smooth wooden deck planks. The force sent the pouch flying out of both their hands, spinning through the cold air before crashing hard onto the wooden deck floor.
The bag bounced once, its zipper sliding wide open as it scraped against the deck. A small edge caught a stray spark from the fire pit, causing a tiny plume of smoke to rise from the corner. As the pouch lay open on the wood, a glossy picture slid out face up into the bright patio light. It was a clear Polaroid photograph of a tiny, newborn baby wrapped in a pink hospital blanket, smiling softly at the camera. Evelyn instantly dropped to her knees, screaming out in utter desperation as she reached for the image.
Evelyn: No! Oh, my baby's picture!
Clara: What... What is this?
