Chapter 3 of 6

My Stepmother Burned My Bag Until A Photo Dropped Out

The Legal Paperwork Revealed

The cold wind blew across the deck, but neither woman moved as the truth sat heavy between them. Evelyn stood up slowly, her knees sore from the hard floor, but her posture was stronger now than it had been in years. She placed the precious baby photo carefully inside her coat pocket, away from the fire and the damage. Clara looked up, her expression softer now, devoid of the burning rage that had driven her just minutes before.

Clara: I thought you were trying to take the life insurance check to pay off your own debts.

Evelyn: I don't care about the life insurance, Clara. Keep the house, keep the money, keep everything.

Clara: But the lawyer said someone accessed the family vault in town three days ago.

Evelyn: That wasn't me. Dad gave access to his business partner, Richard, weeks before he died.

Clara's face went completely pale as Evelyn spoke the name of her late husband's long-time business associate. Richard had been managing the family business accounts ever since the funeral, claiming the estate was nearly bankrupt. Clara had trusted Richard's advice blindly, believing every word when he told her that Evelyn was secretly draining the accounts. Now, the pieces were beginning to fit together in a much more sinister pattern than Clara had ever imagined.

Clara: Richard told me you demanded fifty thousand dollars from the corporate fund last week.

Evelyn: Richard is lying to you! He offered me fifty thousand dollars to sign away my rights to Dad's property!

Clara: He told me the bank was foreclosing on this house because of your personal loans!

Evelyn took out her phone and tapped the screen, pulling up a series of bank statements and emails she had saved. She handed the phone directly to Clara, who held it with shaking hands under the overhead deck light. The documents showed clearly that Richard had been transferring large sums of money out of the estate into an offshore account. Evelyn had been quietly gathering evidence with a local divorce lawyer and fraud investigator to expose Richard's theft before he could drain everything.

Evelyn: Look at the dates, Clara. Richard was stealing the inheritance money while setting us against each other.

Clara: Oh, my God... he made me believe my own stepdaughter was my worst enemy.

Evelyn: He knew if we were fighting over scraps, neither of us would check the main investment accounts.

Clara covered her mouth, tears finally spilling over her wrinkled cheeks as she realized how close she had come to destroying her stepdaughter's only memory of her child. The shame was overwhelming, hitting Clara like a heavy physical blow to her chest. She looked up at Evelyn, no longer seeing a greedy rival, but a grieving young woman who had lost her baby and her father. Clara stood up, taking a hesitant step forward toward Evelyn with open, trembling hands.

Clara: Evelyn... I am so sorry. I almost burned the only thing you had left of your baby.

Evelyn: The photo is safe, but we have to deal with Richard before he leaves the country tomorrow.
