Chapter 4 of 6

My Stepmother Burned My Bag Until A Photo Dropped Out

Confronting The Real Thief

By eight o'clock the following morning, the sun rose brightly over the sleek downtown office building where Richard kept his headquarters. Evelyn and Clara walked through the glass doors together, side by side, their faces set with absolute determination. The receptionist tried to stop them, but Clara pushed right past the front desk without slowing her stride. They reached the top floor executive boardroom where Richard was sitting at a long oak table, shuffling through stack after stack of legal documents.

Richard: Clara? Evelyn? What is the meaning of this unannounced visit so early in the morning?

Clara: Cut the act, Richard. We know exactly what you've been doing with my husband's estate.

Richard: I don't know what you are talking about. I am trying to save your house from foreclosure.

Evelyn: We brought our estate lawyer and a detective, Richard. They are parking downstairs right now.

Richard's confident smile vanished instantly, his face turning gray as he slammed his pen down on the table. He stood up, trying to look intimidating, but his hands were shaking so hard he had to grip the back of his chair. Evelyn pulled out a printed file folder filled with bank records, wire transfers, and forged signature documents, slapping it loudly onto the table. The sharp sound echoed through the high-ceilinged room, cutting off any attempt Richard had at making an excuse.

Evelyn: You forged Dad's signature on the life insurance payout three days after he went into the hospital.

Richard: That was for corporate restructuring! Your father agreed to those terms before he passed!

Clara: My husband would never sign away his family home, you snake! You stole over two million dollars!

Richard: You can't prove any of this in court! The board will back me up on every transaction!

Just then, the boardroom doors opened wide, and two uniformed police officers stepped inside alongside Evelyn's lawyer. The detective held up an arrest warrant signed by a local judge early that morning after reviewing the wire transfer records. Richard took a step back toward the large glass window, looking for any way out, but the officers moved in quickly and placed his hands behind his back. The metal handcuffs clicked loudly, signaling the total collapse of his corporate scheme.

Detective: Richard Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and forgery of legal documents.

Richard: Clara, listen to me! This is all a massive misunderstanding! We can settle this privately!

Clara: Settle it with the prosecutor, Richard. You ruined my family, but you won't take another dime.

As the officers led Richard away down the carpeted hallway, the tension in the room finally began to dissolve into quiet relief. Clara leaned against the edge of the conference table, taking a deep breath for the first time in months. The stolen funds would be frozen by the court and returned to the family trust, securing both Clara's home and Evelyn's rightful inheritance. But as Clara looked at Evelyn, she knew that money was not the most important thing that needed fixing.

Clara: The estate is safe now... but we still have a much bigger promise to keep to you, Evelyn.

Evelyn: What do you mean, Clara?
