Chapter 2 of 6
My Stepmother Burned My Bag Until A Photo Dropped Out
A Secret Hidden For Years
Evelyn pressed her face near the cold wooden planks, her entire body shaking with violent sobs as her fingers gently cupped the photo. She pulled the picture close to her chest, sobbing uncontrollably while the crackling fire hissed behind her. Clara froze in place, her hand still holding the heavy iron poker as she stared down at her stepdaughter on the ground. The sharp anger in Clara's eyes melted into confusion and immediate shock as she looked at the tiny face in the photograph.
Clara: Evelyn... why do you have a newborn photo in that bag? Who is that child?
Evelyn: It was my baby! The baby I was forced to give up six years ago because of you and Dad!
Clara stepped back, her mouth open in total disbelief as the words echoed across the empty patio. Six years earlier, Evelyn had vanished for nearly a year, telling the family she was away at an out-of-state college program. In reality, Evelyn had gotten pregnant at nineteen and carried the baby to term in secret, knowing her strict father would disown her. Clara had always suspected something else happened back then, but she had assumed Evelyn was just spending her father's money recklessly.
Evelyn: You thought I was stealing money, but this pouch only held the adoption records and the one photo I had left!
Clara: You never said a word about a baby. Your father always said you were just rebellious.
Evelyn: Dad knew! He was the one who paid off the agency to make sure I signed those adoption papers!
Evelyn wiped the tears from her face, her eyes red and fierce as she glared up at her stepmother. The truth was finally out, breaking the thick wall of silence that had hung over the house for years. Evelyn explained how her father had threatened to cut her off entirely unless she placed the child with a wealthy adoptive family in another state. He had given her a small trust fund agreement, but Evelyn had refused to touch a single cent of that money out of sheer grief and heartbreak.
Clara: Your father set up a trust fund? But he told me all his money went into the business mortgage.
Evelyn: He lied to both of us, Clara. He used his wealth to control everyone around him.
Clara slowly lowered the iron poker, dropping it onto the stone deck with a loud metallic clatter that startled them both. She looked at the scorched designer bag, then at the photo held tightly in Evelyn's hand. The realization that her late husband had kept massive secrets from her as well began to sink in deep. Clara sat down heavily on a wooden patio bench, her hands trembling as she rubbed her temples in complete exhaustion.
Clara: If you weren't looking for money in the safe... what were you actually searching for this morning?
Evelyn: I was looking for the original adoption agency contract. I need to find my daughter, Clara.
