Chapter 5 of 6
His Arrogant Nephew Tried To Ruin Christmas Dinner
The Truth Exposed
Arthur walked slowly toward the head of the table, picking up his fallen chair and setting it upright again. Julian stood frozen near the cabinet, his arrogance entirely gone, replaced by a deep, defensive bitterness. Martha wiped a tear from her eye, stepping closer to her brother as she looked at her disgraced nephew. She asked Julian why he was really here tonight if he hated his family so much as he claimed. Julian looked away, biting his lip as his eyes darted nervously toward the heavy leather briefcase he brought. Arthur walked over to the armchair where Julian had dropped his coat and picked up the thick leather bag. He opened the top latch without asking for permission, pulling out a stack of urgent court documents and notices. Julian gasped, taking a quick step forward as if to grab the papers out of his uncle's hands. But one sharp look from Arthur made the younger man freeze in his tracks, dropping his head in defeat. Arthur scanned the top page, his eyes narrowing as he read the official legal text printed across the paper. The documents were foreclosure notices on Julian's luxury apartment and a lawsuit from his former business partners.
Uncle Arthur: You didn't come here to celebrate the holidays with us, did you? You came to beg for money.
Julian: It's just a temporary setback! I just need a short-term loan to clear my name!
Uncle Arthur: You lied to your aunt, put down our family, and tried to attack me, all while wanting a handout?
Julian: I had no choice! They are going to take my car and my apartment by next week!
Uncle Arthur: You always have a choice, Julian. You chose pride and disrespect over honesty and hard work.
Martha covered her mouth, a sad sigh escaping her lips as she looked at the truth laid out clearly. She had been ready to help her nephew with her own savings if he had simply asked politely. But seeing how rudely he had treated everyone today shattered her desire to enable his destructive lifestyle choices. Julian looked at his aunt, his eyes filled with a desperate plea for help that came far too late. He realized that his terrible behavior had burned the very bridge he needed to save himself from ruin. Arthur placed the legal documents back inside the leather briefcase and closed the brass latch with a heavy click. He held the bag out toward Julian, his face set like stone as he made his final decision. The room was deathly quiet, the gravity of the moment settling over everyone like the heavy snow outside. Julian reached out with shaking hands and took the briefcase, his fingers trembling as he clutched it tight. He had lost his pride, his dignity, and the financial lifeline he had secretly hoped to secure tonight. Arthur walked toward the front door, pulling it open to reveal the freezing winter night waiting outside for him.
