Chapter 3 of 6
His Arrogant Nephew Tried To Ruin Christmas Dinner
The Breaking Point
Arthur leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table as he stared straight into his nephew's arrogant eyes. The room fell completely silent, save for the soft crackle of the wood burning inside the nearby fireplace. Martha looked nervously between her brother and her nephew, sensing that the fragile peace had officially shattered. Julian noticed his uncle's intense stare and sneered, dropping his smartphone face down onto the wooden surface. He crossed his arms over his tailored blue blazer, puffing out his chest to look as intimidating as possible. Arthur did not flinch, his calm expression remaining completely unchanged despite Julian's hostile body language across the table. He knew that bullies always reacted with anger when someone dared to question their carefully constructed image. Arthur spoke in a low, measured voice that carried clearly across the quiet dining room to every ear. He asked Julian about his latest investment firm, mentioning a specific company that had recently gone into bankruptcy court. Julian's face turned pale for a split second before a surge of bright red anger flushed up his neck. He realized his uncle knew far more about his failing business ventures than he had previously let on.
Julian: What do you know about my investments? You don't know anything about real finance!
Uncle Arthur: I know your firm lost millions last month, Julian. And I know your creditors are calling.
Julian: Shut your mouth! You have no right to bring up my personal business at this table!
Uncle Arthur: You brought your toxic attitude into my home. If you want respect, act like a man who deserves it.
Julian: You think you can talk to me like that? Enough!
Julian snapped completely, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage as he stood up from his chair. The heavy chair crashed backward onto the hard hardwood floor with a deafening bang that echoed through the room. Martha shrieked in terror, covering her mouth with both hands as she scrambled away from the table. Julian leaned forward over the food, knocking over a heavy crystal candlestick and sending warm wax dripping everywhere. He reached across the table with wild eyes, reaching for Arthur's tan jacket with aggressive intent to harm. Arthur did not panic, stepping back from his chair with smooth, practiced movements as Julian lunged toward him. Julian threw a clumsy, furious punch aimed directly at his uncle's jaw, throwing all his weight behind the swing. Arthur calmly sidestepped the wild attack, letting Julian's momentum carry the younger man out of balance over the table. Before Julian could recover his footing, Arthur snapped his right hand forward in a swift, powerful open-handed strike. The loud slap echoed through the room like a gunshot, striking Julian squarely across his reddened left cheek.
