Chapter 2 of 6

His Arrogant Nephew Tried To Ruin Christmas Dinner

Tension Across the Table

As the meal began, the sound of silverware clicking against porcelain filled the large dining room. Martha passed the roasted turkey toward Julian, hoping to keep the mood light and friendly. Julian took the platter carelessly, dumping a massive portion onto his plate without saying thank you to his aunt. Arthur watched his nephew's rude behavior, taking a slow breath to keep his rising anger under control. He wanted to give the boy a chance to prove he had matured over the past few years. But Julian seemed determined to prove the exact opposite to everyone sitting around the table that night. He started talking about his high-end apartment in the city, exaggerating his monthly earnings and mocking small-town living. He looked directly at Martha, making condescending comments about her modest suburban home and simple lifestyle choices. Martha dropped her gaze to her plate, her cheeks flushing red with deep embarrassment under her nephew's harsh words. Arthur placed his fork down gently, the heavy silver making a soft thud against the white linen tablecloth. He fixed his gaze on Julian, his voice steady and quiet as he spoke across the food.

Uncle Arthur: Julian, your aunt spent all day preparing this meal for us. Show some gratitude.

Julian: I am just telling the truth, Arthur. Some people are satisfied with mediocrity, but I am built for real success.

Uncle Arthur: Real success includes humility and basic manners, two things you seem to lack entirely.

Julian: Don't lecture me about success! You are just an old man living off old money in the middle of nowhere.

Julian slammed his glass onto the table, splashing red wine across the white tablecloth near his aunt's plate. Martha gasped, reaching for a napkin to clean up the stain before it could spread any further. Julian did not even apologize, simply leaning back in his chair with a smug smile across his face. He picked up his phone and began tapping out a message, completely ignoring the family members around him. Arthur reached over and placed a hand on Martha's shaking fingers, offering her a reassuring smile before looking back. He knew that Julian was hiding something behind all his loud bravado and expensive designer clothes. A truly successful businessman did not need to put down his own family just to make himself feel important. Arthur had seen dozens of young men like Julian during his forty years in the commercial real estate market. They were always loud, always arrogant, and almost always standing on the edge of complete financial destruction. Arthur decided it was time to press a little deeper to see what was really going on beneath Julian's confident surface.
