Chapter 2 of 6
A Father Returns Home Early and Finds His Daughter Scrubbing Floors
Secrets Behind Closed Doors
Mark walked into the kitchen and poured himself a cold glass of water.
His hands shook slightly as he set the glass down on the marble counter.
He had married Victoria two years ago after meeting her at a charity event.
She had seemed kind, warm, and eager to welcome Lily into her life.
Lily had lost her biological mother five years ago after a long illness.
Mark thought Victoria would give his daughter the maternal love she missed.
Now he realized he had made a terrible mistake in trusting her appearance.
Victoria walked into the kitchen with her arms crossed over her chest.
Victoria: You are overreacting to a simple household chore, Mark.
Mark: Forcing a girl to scrub floors in uniform is not a chore.
Victoria: She needs to understand that life is not all fun and games.
Mark: You hired a full cleaning staff three months ago, Victoria.
Victoria: I sent them away for the week to save money.
Mark: I give you five thousand dollars a month for household expenses!
Victoria turned her gaze away toward the window without answering.
Mark felt a strong wave of suspicion rise deep inside his heart.
He walked out of the kitchen and headed straight toward his private office.
He unlocked the heavy mahogany door and stepped into the quiet room.
He opened his laptop and logged into the joint family bank account.
His eyes widened as he scrolled through the recent transaction history.
Large sums of money had been transferred out over the past six months.
Ten thousand dollars went to a personal account he did not recognize.
Another fifteen thousand dollars was withdrawn from an automated teller last week.
Mark printed out the bank statements with a heavy feeling in his stomach.
He walked upstairs to check on Lily in her bedroom at the end.
He knocked gently on the white wooden door before opening it slowly.
Lily was sitting on the edge of her bed holding a small photo frame.
The photo showed her and her late mother at the beach years ago.
Mark: May I sit down with you for a minute, sweetie?
Lily nodded silently and moved over to make room on the bed.
Lily: I am sorry if I got you into trouble, Dad.
Mark: You did nothing wrong, Lily, and I am so sorry.
Lily: She started making me clean right after you left for your trip.
Mark: Has this happened before when I was away on business?
Lily looked down at her lap and slowly nodded her head yes.
Lily: Every time you leave, she takes away my phone and computer.
Mark: Why did you not tell me on the phone during our calls?
Lily: She stood in the room and watched every word I said.
Mark pulled his daughter into a tight hug as tears filled his eyes.
Mark: You will never have to hide anything from me again, Lily.
