Chapter 1 of 6
A Father Returns Home Early and Finds His Daughter Scrubbing Floors
The Unexpected Early Return
The afternoon sun spilled across the polished oak floor of the suburban mansion.
Mark pulled his silver sedan into the wide driveway earlier than scheduled.
He had spent three exhausting weeks negotiating an important business merger across the country.
All he wanted was to hug his daughter and enjoy a quiet family dinner.
He grabbed his leather briefcase from the passenger seat and walked up the steps.
The heavy front door opened quietly as he unlocked it with his key.
A faint smell of lemon polish drifted through the wide hallway.
He heard the quiet rhythmic sound of wet cloth dragging across wood.
Mark set his briefcase down near the entrance wall.
He walked toward the main living room with a smile on his face.
He expected to see his wife relaxing on the velvet couch reading a magazine.
Instead he saw a young girl on her hands and knees scrubbing.
She wore a faded grey uniform and a stained cotton apron.
Her dark hair fell messy around her face as she rubbed the floorboards hard.
Mark stopped moving as a cold feeling spread through his chest.
The girl wiped sweat from her forehead with the back of her wrist.
When she turned her head, Mark recognized her soft green eyes immediately.
Mark: Lily?
The girl froze in place and dropped her wet scrubbing rag.
Lily: Dad?
Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked up at him.
Mark took three quick steps forward and knelt down beside her.
Mark: What are you doing on the floor, sweatheart?
Lily: I am doing my chores like I was told to do.
Mark: Who told you to do this kind of work?
Lily lowered her head and pressed her lips tightly together.
She pointed her finger toward the back hallway leading to the kitchen.
High heels clicked sharply against the wooden floorboards in the corridor.
Victoria walked into the living room with an elegant smile on her face.
She held a crystal glass filled with white wine in her hand.
Victoria: Darling, you are home early from your trip.
Mark: Why is my daughter scrubbing the floors like a servant?
Victoria took a slow sip from her glass and smiled dismissively.
Victoria: She needed to learn proper discipline and respect, Mark.
Mark: She is a high school student, not a maid!
Victoria: She was being lazy, so I gave her useful duties.
Mark stood up slowly, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.
Mark: Get off the floor right now, Lily.
Lily stood up quickly and wiped her red hands on her apron.
Mark: Go to your room and pack your bags immediately.
Victoria: Where do you think she is going, Mark?
Mark: Anywhere away from you, Victoria.
Victoria gasped slightly and set her glass down on the table.
Victoria: You cannot speak to me like that in my own house!
Mark: This is my home, and you crossed a dangerous line today.
Lily hurried up the grand staircase while her parents stood facing each other.
Mark watched his wife with cold eyes as the silence grew heavy.
