Chapter 3 of 6
The Secret Hidden Behind The Locked Dallas Mansion Door
The Shadow Of The Basement
The bright dining room fell into an absolute, chilling silence after Evelyn's sudden loud declaration.
Mark's face lost all its normal color, turning completely pale in the soft sunlight.
"What did you just say to her?" Mark asked in a hollow, frightening voice.
"I said what needed to be said years ago," Evelyn replied while trembling head to toe.
Claire looked between Mark and Evelyn while keeping her grip tight on her phone.
"Ma'am, did you say there is a basement area officers need to inspect?" the dispatcher asked.
"Yes, tell them there are legal records locked behind the wine cellar wall," Evelyn confirmed.
Mark lunged toward the dining table and slammed both fists onto the polished wood again.
"You ruined me!" Mark screamed at his mother as his eyes turned red with anger.
"You ruined yourself when you forged your father's final life insurance paperwork!" Evelyn countered.
Claire gasped softly as the full picture began to form in her sharp mind.
She remembered the strange thick metal door she had noticed behind the wooden rack months ago.
Mark had always kept that specific basement room locked with a heavy digital keypad lock.
He had told her it was only used for storing expensive commercial wine collections.
"You stole the entire inheritance from your sister's trust fund," Evelyn said with deep sadness.
"She was never supposed to get a single dollar of that money!" Mark yelled back loud.
"It was her legal right after your father passed away five years ago!" Evelyn argued.
Claire held the phone up to her ear and confirmed the emergency location details again.
"The officers are three minutes away from your front gate, ma'am," the operator stated clearly.
Mark turned his head toward the front entrance hall as distant siren sounds faint echoes.
Panic replaced the anger on his face as he realized his time was running out fast.
He looked at the open dining room exit and then back toward his trembling mother.
"If they open that safe room, everything we own will be seized!" Mark shouted desperately.
"Then let it all go, because the truth must finally come out," Evelyn answered quietly.
Claire stepped closer to the doorway to ensure she had a clear escape path open.
She watched her husband realize that his years of grand deception were finally over today.
