Chapter 2 of 6
The Secret Hidden Behind The Locked Dallas Mansion Door
An Unwanted Secret Revealed
Evelyn rushed across the hardwood floor with her hands raised in a desperate pleading gesture.
She placed herself directly between her furious son and her frightened daughter-in-law.
"This was just a terrible misunderstanding about the family estate trust," Evelyn claimed rapidly.
"He threw a plate at my feet and threatened me!" Claire yelled back at her mother-in-law.
Mark tried to push past his mother, but Evelyn held her arm out to stop him.
"Do not take another step toward her, Mark," Evelyn warned her son in a shaky tone.
"This has nothing to do with you, Mother," Mark growled through his clenched jaw.
"It has everything to do with this family name and our reputation!" Evelyn shouted back instantly.
Claire kept her phone pressed firmly against her cheek while the operator stayed on the line.
"Ma'am, are you in a safe location right now?" the emergency operator asked clearly through speaker.
"He is standing right in front of me in the dining room," Claire reported firmly.
Mark reached out toward the phone, but Evelyn shoved his arm away with sudden force.
"You cannot let those officers come inside this house today, Mark!" Evelyn whispered desperately.
Claire caught the strange tone of utter terror in her mother-in-law's raspy voice.
She realized that Evelyn was not just protecting Mark from an arrest for domestic disturbance.
There was something much larger and more dangerous that Evelyn was trying to keep hidden.
"Why are you so afraid of the police showing up here?" Claire asked, narrowing her eyes.
Evelyn turned her head slowly to look at Claire with tears forming in her eyes.
"Because if they search this property, none of us will ever leave," Evelyn whispered quietly.
Mark grabbed Evelyn's shoulder tightly and tried to pull her away from Claire's side.
"Shut your mouth right now, Mother!" Mark barked with absolute fury in his eyes.
"I will not stay quiet while you destroy everything!" Evelyn screamed back at her son.
Claire took three steps back toward the curtained windows to maintain a safe physical distance.
"Operator, please send officers to the address right now," Claire repeated into her phone.
Evelyn leaned forward toward the phone microphone with a sudden, dark and desperate burst.
"Tell the officers to check the locked basement behind the wine rack!" Evelyn shouted out.
Mark froze instantly in his tracks as if hit by a sudden physical blow.
