Chapter 3 of 6
She Was Thrown Out Until They Saw Her VIP Pass
The Gold Envelope
The guard held the envelope in his trembling fingers under the bright lights of the entrance hall. The envelope was thick, made of heavy linen paper that felt extremely expensive to the touch. On the front, elegant gold letters were deeply embossed into the surface. The guard lowered his head, staring intently at the name written on the card. He blinked several times as if he could not believe his own eyes. The tension in the air grew so thick that even the breeze outside seemed to stop moving through the high trees.
The white card glowed under the warm recessed lighting of the grand entryway. Printed clearly across the center in dark, raised ink were the words: CHARLOTTE VALLE - Host's Most Honored Special Guest. Below her name was the personal seal of Arthur Valle, the elderly billionaire who owned the massive estate and controlled the largest trust fund in the state. The guard's hands began to shake even more as he realized the huge mistake that had almost been made at the front door. He looked up slowly from the card, his face turning pale.
Security Guard: She's the host's most honored guest!
Victoria: What? That is impossible! Give me that card!
Security Guard: Ma'am, this is signed by Mr. Valle himself. It has his real gold stamp.
Charlotte: Do you still think I am dirty trash, Victoria?
Victoria: No... there must be a mistake. You stole that card!
Victoria pushed herself up from the hardwood floor using the frame of the door for support. Her face was bright red with humiliation, her expensive dress completely wrinkled along the side. The crowd of guests behind Charlotte began whispering furiously to one another. The sound of their muffled gasps and sharp chuckles filled the hallway, directed straight at Victoria. The woman who had just tried to throw someone out was now standing on display like a total fool in front of her high-society peers.
Charlotte stepped forward, taking the card back from the guard with a smooth movement. She held it up close to Victoria's pale face so she could see every line of text clearly. Victoria shrank back slightly, her wide eyes moving over the official seal. The realization of what she had done hit her like a cold bucket of water. Charlotte was not some poor trespasser who had snuck into the estate grounds. She was the guest of honor, handpicked by the most powerful man in the city to attend this private gathering.
Charlotte: My mother worked forty years in Mr. Valle's house. He wrote this himself.
Victoria: Your... your mother was a servant here?
Charlotte: She was his trusted business lawyer, and my father built this company.
Victoria: I... I did not know... please forgive me.
Charlotte: It is too late to apologize now that you know who I am.
Charlotte turned slightly, looking over her shoulder at the wealthy woman huddled near the door. A slow, subtle smirk appeared on Charlotte's face as she watched Victoria attempt to smooth out her ruined dress. The power dynamic had completely shifted in a matter of seconds. The security guard immediately stepped aside, pulling the heavy double doors wide open to allow Charlotte full access to the main ballroom. He bowed his head low, not daring to look Charlotte in the eyes after his earlier hesitation.
