Chapter 1 of 6

She Was Thrown Out Until They Saw Her VIP Pass

The Guard At The Door

The bright afternoon sun bounced off the high glass windows of the grand hall. Charlotte adjusted the heavy strap of her worn canvas bag. Her dark ripped jeans were faded at the knees, and her simple grey sneakers had seen better days. She had walked five long blocks from the subway station, her feet aching slightly inside her old shoes. The invitation in her back pocket felt thick and heavy. She pulled it out just to double-check the address printed in dark ink. The mansion stood behind two massive wrought-iron gates that looked older than the city itself. Green vines stretched up the white stone pillars, making the entrance look like something from a movie. A smooth marble driveway curved up toward a set of polished wooden double doors.

Charlotte stepped past the open gates, her eyes darting around the manicured lawn. Fancy black sedans and gleaming sports cars were parked in neat rows along the side driveway. Drivers in dark suits stood near the vehicles, checking their watches and talking in quiet whispers. Charlotte kept her head down, feeling the cold stares of several drivers as she walked by. Her heart beat a little faster, but she reminded herself why she was here today. Her mother had worked for forty long years without getting the respect she truly deserved. Today was meant to change all of that for their family. Charlotte held her ground and continued walking steadily up the wide marble stairs toward the front door.

At the top of the stairs, a tall guard stood with his arms crossed over his dark uniform. His eyes locked onto Charlotte the moment her worn sneakers hit the top step. He stepped sideways, blocking the entrance with his wide shoulders. The atmosphere felt heavy and cold as Charlotte stopped two feet away from him. Inside the hall, soft piano music played, and light laughter echoed out through the slightly open glass doors. Charlotte could smell rich perfume and expensive flowers drifting out into the warm afternoon air. She took a deep breath, reaching down into her pocket to fetch her entry pass. But before her fingers could touch the card, a sharp voice cut through the quiet entrance area.

Victoria: Stop right there. What do you think you are doing?

Charlotte turned around slowly to face a tall woman dressed in a sparkling black and gold dress. The woman carried a small designer clutch that looked like it cost more than Charlotte's annual rent. Her hair was pulled back into a slick, perfect bun, and her makeup was flawless. She looked Charlotte up and down with a deep look of disgust on her face. The woman stepped closer, her golden high heels clicking loudly against the polished marble floor of the entrance. She did not hesitate to make her feelings known to everyone standing nearby.

Victoria: Dirty trash like you cannot enter here!

Charlotte: Excuse me? Who are you calling trash?

Victoria: Look at yourself. Ripped pants, cheap shoes, and a dirty bag.

Charlotte: My clothes do not define why I am standing here today.

Victoria: Security, get this beggar away from the entrance before the real guests arrive.

The guard shifted his feet nervously, looking between Victoria and Charlotte. Victoria was a well-known member of the city's high society, while Charlotte looked like a college student who had taken a wrong turn. A small crowd of arriving guests began to gather at the bottom of the stairs. They whispered to each other behind their designer sunglasses, pointing at Charlotte's worn outfit. The air was thick with judgment, and Charlotte felt a surge of heat rise up her neck. But instead of shrinking back or crying, she straightened her back and looked Victoria dead in the eye.
