Chapter 4 of 6
She Humiliated The Maid Until Her Husband Revealed The Truth
Confrontation Under The USA Flag
Arthur stepped right up to Victoria, his tall frame blocking the bright sunlight streaming through the massive glass windows. The room went silent as he stood between his wife and the sobbing maid. The heavy dramatic orchestral music in the hall faded away, replaced by the quiet ambient echo of the massive room.
Arthur: Let go of her.
Victoria looked up, surprised by the stern tone in Arthur's voice. She tightened her grip on Clara's arm for a second before releasing her, trying to regain her calm, polished smile for the watching crowd.
Victoria: Arthur, thank goodness you are here! She took my diamond bracelet from my room!
Arthur: Let her job be over.
Victoria's eyes widened in utter shock and panic. Her mouth hung open as she looked at Arthur, believing for a split second that Arthur was siding with her and firing Clara on the spot in front of everyone.
Victoria: You... you are firing her right now? Without calling the police first?
Arthur: She was only protecting my mother.
A sharp gasp filled the room. Victoria froze in disbelief, her hands dropping to her sides as the red dress seemed to lose its bright luster under the glaring lights. She looked from Arthur to Clara, who was now standing safely beside Arthur, her tears drying as she stood tall and proud.
Victoria: What are you talking about, Arthur? She is a common thief!
Arthur: The bracelet you claim is missing is sitting in your own handbag inside the study. You put it there twenty minutes ago.
Victoria: That is a lie! Who told you that ridiculous story?
Arthur pointed toward his elderly mother sitting in the golden armchair beneath the framed USA flag painting. Eleanor pressed a button on her wheelchair, slowly driving it forward until she stopped directly in front of Victoria. Eleanor looked up at her daughter-in-law with sharp, cold eyes filled with disgust.
Eleanor: I watched you, Victoria. I saw you take the bracelet out of your jewelry box, slip it into your purse, and then try to grab the safe key from Clara's apron pocket.
