Chapter 2 of 6
She Humiliated The Maid Until Her Husband Revealed The Truth
A Missing Family Heirloom
By seven in the evening, the grand hall was filled with music, laughter, and light. Underneath the center archway, a massive framed painting of the American flag hung on the wall, representing the legacy of Arthur's late grandfather. Beneath the painting sat Eleanor in her golden wheelchair, watching the guests with sharp, watchful eyes despite her failing physical health.
Suddenly, a loud screech echoed across the high ceiling of the hall, cutting through the pleasant background music. Guests stopped talking and turned their heads toward the eastern hallway. Victoria was standing near the study door, holding her empty left wrist in the air while pointing a long crimson nail at Clara.
Victoria: My diamond bracelet! It is gone! Where did you put it?
Clara: I didn't touch your bracelet, Mrs. Sterling! I was just cleaning the hallway table!
Victoria: You were the only person near my dressing room ten minutes ago!
Victoria marched over to Clara, grabbing the poor maid tightly by the arm. Clara gasped in pain, her face turning pale as tears filled her eyes. She pulled back slightly, but Victoria's grip was firm and harsh, holding her tightly in front of fifty wealthy guests who gathered around to watch the embarrassing scene.
Clara: Please, ma'am! You are hurting me! I swear I didn't take anything!
Victoria: I don't care who you are. Do you know who I am?
Clara: I know who you are, Mrs. Sterling! Please let go!
Victoria: You are a thief! You think because you worked here for years, you can steal my expensive jewelry?
Eleanor watched from her golden chair across the room, her frail hands gripping the armrests tightly. She tried to speak, but her voice was too weak to carry over the murmuring crowd. Victoria turned around, looking at the wealthy guests with dramatic tears in her eyes, acting like a victim who had been betrayed by a trusted household employee.
Victoria: This maid has been stealing from this house! I want the police called immediately!
Guest 1: How terrible! You can't trust help these days.
Guest 2: She should be locked up right now.
Clara sobbed harder, her head lowered in deep shame as the crowd judged her without knowing the truth. She looked up helplessly at Arthur, who was walking briskly through the crowd toward them, his face stern and dark with emotion.
