Chapter 3 of 6
She Humiliated The Maid Until Her Husband Revealed The Truth
The Hidden Financial Papers
Just one hour before the party started, Arthur had been in his private home office with his personal divorce lawyer, heavy folders spread out across his desk. For weeks, Arthur had been investigating strange financial transactions leaving his mother's main estate account. Thousands of dollars were being moved every week into an offshore account registered under a fake business name.
Lawyer: The bank records are clear, Arthur. The signature on these trust fund transfers belongs to your wife.
Arthur: Victoria? She has been taking money from my mother's medical care fund?
Lawyer: Not just the medical fund. Look at these documents. She tried to alter your mother's legal will last month.
Arthur stared at the paper in shock. The document was a fake codicil, changing Eleanor's sole heir from Arthur to Victoria in the event of Eleanor's sudden death. The signature at the bottom was forged, but it looked remarkably similar to Eleanor's handwriting.
Arthur: How could she do this? My mother trusted her like a daughter.
Lawyer: She didn't do it alone. She needed physical access to the safe in your mother's bedroom. Who holds the key?
Arthur: Clara keeps the primary key on her belt. She manages all of my mother's daily routine.
Arthur had immediately called Clara into his office privately before the guests arrived. He showed her the altered documents and asked her if she knew anything about missing keys or late-night visits to the master safe. Clara had broken down in tears, admitting that Victoria had been trying to bribe her for three weeks straight, offering her fifty thousand dollars in cash to hand over the key to Eleanor's legal papers.
Clara: I refused her every time, Mr. Sterling! I would never betray your mother!
Arthur: What did she do when you refused?
Clara: She threatened to ruin my life. She said she would plant stolen items on me and get me sent to prison!
Arthur remembered those words as he pushed his way through the gathered crowd in the bright grand hall. He saw Victoria gripping Clara's arm with force, making a loud public scene to ruin Clara's reputation just as she had threatened. Victoria was trying to destroy Clara's credibility so that no one would believe Clara if she spoke up about the forged will.
