Chapter 4 of 6

Little Girl Claims Her Missing Dad Lives Beneath Floorboards

A Secret Living Below

The paramedics carried David carefully out to the waiting ambulance vehicle.

Lily broke free from the officer's grip and ran toward the stretcher.

Lily: Daddy! You came back!

David smiled weakly through his tears and reached for her hand.

David: I promised I would never leave you, Lily.

The ambulance team allowed Lily to sit beside her father inside.

Sarah stood near the open doorway watching the emotional reunion.

Mark joined her while holding the legal files in a clear evidence bag.

Mark: How did Richard manage to lock him down there?

Sarah: Richard lured David down to check old family documents three weeks ago.

Sarah: Then he locked the secret hatch from above.

Mark: Why didn't he just kill him?

Sarah: Because the trust fund required David's biological signature every month.

Sarah: Richard brought him small rations of food to keep him alive.

Sarah: He forced him to sign over monthly estate checks.

Mark looked back at the gaping hole in the middle of the living room.

Mark: That is cold and calculated cruelty for money.

Sarah: Richard thought the dark mark on the wood was invisible.

Sarah: But Lily noticed it because she spent every day playing on the floor.

Detective Henderson pulled up to the curb in an unmarked police cruiser.

He walked quickly up the paved walkway toward the front door.

Henderson: What do we have here, officers?

Sarah handed him the evidence bag containing the stolen estate records.

Sarah: Full attempted murder, kidnapping, and massive financial fraud.

Henderson: Is the suspect in custody?

Mark pointed to the back of a second police cruiser sitting at the curb.

Richard sat in the back seat with his head resting against the glass window.

Mark: He is locked up tight and not going anywhere.

Henderson: Excellent work by both of you today.

Sarah: The real credit goes to that brave little girl inside the ambulance.

Sarah walked back inside to secure the crime scene perimeter tape.

She looked down into the dark open hatch one last time.

The dark mark on the hardwood was finally explained.

It was oil from the hydraulic mechanism Richard used to seal the hatch.

Justice was finally ready to be served for this family.
