Chapter 1 of 6
Little Girl Claims Her Missing Dad Lives Beneath Floorboards
The Strange Stain On Hardwood
Officer Sarah stepped through the front entrance of the quiet suburban home.
Bright morning sunlight spilled across the clean oak floorboards in the living room.
A six-year-old girl named Lily sat alone near the center of the spacious room.
She held her stuffed bear tightly against her small chest.
Her eyes were swollen and red from hours of silent crying.
Sarah approached the little girl with soft and slow footsteps.
She dropped down to one knee to match the child's height.
Sarah: Hi Lily, my name is Officer Sarah.
Lily did not speak right away.
She pointed her finger toward a dark mark on the wood floor.
Lily: Daddy is under there.
Sarah looked closely at the dark stain near the baseboard.
It looked like a strange chemical residue left behind recently.
Sarah: Sweetheart, your dad went missing three weeks ago.
Lily: He is not gone.
Lily: He whispers to me when the house gets dark.
Sarah felt a sudden chill run down her spine.
Officer Mark walked into the room holding a small notepad.
Mark: The mother is still at the police station signing papers.
Sarah: Mark, come take a look at this floor right now.
Mark walked over and stared at the dark rectangular gap in the wood.
Mark: That just looks like an old water stain to me.
Lily: No, he knocks three times every night.
Lily placed both of her palms flat against the hardwood.
She pressed her ear against the cool polished surface.
Sarah: Did you hear anything last night, Lily?
Lily: He said he was cold and hungry.
Mark took a deep breath and pulled out his radio.
Mark: Kids say strange things when they miss a parent.
Sarah: Look at her face, Mark.
Sarah: She is not making up a fantasy story.
Sarah: Call the forensic team to bring subterranean ground radar.
Mark adjusted his radio frequency with a hesitant frown.
Mark: Dispatch, this is Unit Four requesting specialized scanning equipment.
Lily looked up at Sarah with hopeful brown eyes.
Lily: Is daddy coming back up now?
Sarah: We are going to check, sweetheart.
Sarah placed a gentle hand on Lily's narrow shoulder.
She noticed subtle scratch marks along the edge of the trim.
Someone had moved these boards recently.
The house had belonged to Lily's grandfather before his passing.
It was a massive estate involved in a bitter legal trust fund dispute.
Lily's stepfather had been trying to sell the property quickly.
He claimed the mortgage payments were far too expensive.
Sarah remembered reading the missing person report earlier that morning.
Lily's biological father was named David.
David was supposed to collect his full inheritance payout this week.
Instead, he vanished without leaving a single trace behind.
Sarah stood up and looked around the quiet room.
The white crown molding and tall windows looked perfectly normal.
Yet a heavy sense of danger filled the warm room air.
Sarah: Nobody steps on these boards until the team arrives.
