Chapter 3 of 6
Little Girl Claims Her Missing Dad Lives Beneath Floorboards
Uncovering The Hidden Chamber
Two fire department squad members ran into the room carrying heavy tools.
One firefighter held a steel prybar with a sharp curved end.
Firefighter: Clear the immediate area for safety.
Sarah carried Lily out to the bright front porch area.
She handed the child safely to a waiting female officer.
Sarah: Keep her safe until we secure the inside.
Sarah walked back into the living room and drew her sidearm.
Mark kept a close watch on Richard near the entry hallway.
The firefighter wedged the steel prybar deep between two thick oak boards.
A loud cracking sound echoed through the high-ceiling room.
Wood splinters flew through the air as the locking latch gave way.
A three-foot section of the floor lifted upward like a heavy door.
A sudden wave of cold dusty air rushed up from the dark opening.
Mark shined his high-powered flashlight straight down into the black hole.
A steep flight of narrow wooden stairs led straight down into the darkness.
Mark: Police officers! Is anyone down there?
A low, raspy voice called back weakly from below.
David: Help me... please.
Sarah stepped toward the edge of the open floor hatch.
Sarah: David, stay where you are, rescue is here.
She descended the narrow stairs with her flashlight guiding each step.
The subterranean air smelled heavily of damp concrete and old dust.
At the bottom of the stairs, a small reinforced steel door stood open.
Inside the tiny concrete room sat a thin man wrapped in a blanket.
Empty plastic water bottles lay scattered across the hard cold floor.
David lifted a hand to shield his eyes from the flashlight beam.
David: Is Lily safe upstairs?
Sarah: She is safe, David.
Sarah: She was the one who told us where to look.
Tears streamed down David's dusty, pale cheeks.
David: I tried to knock on the ceiling joists every night.
Sarah: Medical team, we need a stretcher down here right now.
Two paramedics carefully navigated down the narrow wooden stairs.
They wrapped David in a warm blanket and lifted him gently onto a backboard.
Sarah looked around the small concrete room with her flashlight.
She noticed a heavy steel safe mounted into the far back wall.
The safe door stood slightly open, revealing stacks of legal folders inside.
Sarah put on blue nitrile gloves and stepped toward the open safe.
She pulled out a thick envelope labeled with official court seals.
It contained the complete original family estate trust documents.
It also contained a heavily altered life insurance policy form.
Sarah turned around and carried the documents back up the stairs.
Richard was standing in the living room with handcuffs locked on his wrists.
Mark: He tried to run for his car while you were downstairs.
Sarah: He wasn't just hiding David.
Sarah: He was trying to steal the entire family inheritance.
