Chapter 4 of 6
His Mother Forced Her To Wash Dishes While Holding Baby
The Secret In The Folder
Connor stood tall between his mother and his small family, his face red with a mix of intense concern and burning anger. He picked up the heavy paper folder from the island and pulled out a stack of stamped court documents, holding them up so Eleanor could clearly see the official seal printed on the top page. Sarah wiped her eyes, looking at the papers with confusion and growing hope as her breath slowly calmed down.
Connor: Did you really think I would never check Dad's actual estate records, Mom?
Eleanor: Your father wanted me taken care of first before anyone else received a single dollar!
Connor: Dad left this house to me and my brother equally, with a trust fund set aside specifically for my children!
Sarah: Connor... is that true?
Connor: Yes, Sarah. She has been hiding the probate papers for six months to control us.
Eleanor: I built this home with your father! You have no right to take it away from me!
Connor: You lied to my wife, treated her like a maid, and forced her to pay rent on a house I already own!
Eleanor took a step backward, shaking her head in denial, but her voice lost its harsh authority, turning shrill and panicked. She pointed toward the hallway, as if trying to assert dominance over a home that was rapidly slipping out of her legal control.
Eleanor: I am your mother! You owe me respect and obedience in this family!
Connor: Respect is earned, Mom, and you lost every bit of it today when you hurt my wife.
Sarah: Eleanor, I tried so hard to like you and make this work for Connor's sake.
Eleanor: Shut up, Sarah! You drove a wedge between my son and me the day you walked into his life!
Connor: Stop shouting at her! She did nothing wrong except trust you!
Connor turned his back on his mother, placing his arm back around Sarah's waist as he guided her gently toward the kitchen archway. Sarah held Leo tight against her shoulder, taking a long, shaky breath as the weight of months of emotional abuse began to lift off her shoulders. But just as they reached the hallway leading toward the stairs, heavy boots sounded against the front porch outside, followed by three sharp knocks on the heavy wooden door.
Eleanor: Who is at the door at this hour?
Connor: I called the police from the car before I walked inside, Mom.
Eleanor: You called the police on your own mother?
Connor: I called them to accompany us while we take our belongings and to file a report for financial fraud.
