Chapter 3 of 6

His Mother Forced Her To Wash Dishes While Holding Baby

Connor Steps Into The Room

The heavy front door clicked open in the foyer, followed by the firm sound of footsteps moving quickly down the hallway. Connor entered the kitchen area wearing his light blue button-down shirt, holding a folder of papers in his hand, but he stopped dead in his tracks the instant he saw the scene before him. His eyes widened in complete shock as he took in his wife sobbing against the sink with their crying baby, while his mother stood over them with her arm raised in fury.

Connor: What on earth is going on in here?

Sarah: Connor... she said I had to finish these first or we had to leave!

Connor: What are you talking about, Sarah? What did she say to you?

Sarah: She told me I was useless and that you made a mistake marrying me!

Eleanor: I was simply telling her to keep the kitchen clean, Connor, she is exaggerating as usual!

Connor dropped the folder onto the island counter with a heavy thud and rushed across the hardwood floor toward his wife. He placed a protective hand on Sarah's back, wrapping his other arm around both her and baby Leo, shielding them completely from Eleanor's cold stare. He could feel Sarah shaking violently against his chest as her tears soaked through his blue shirt.

Connor: Mom, step back away from my wife right now.

Eleanor: Connor, do not speak to your mother in that tone over a few dirty dishes!

Connor: Look at her! She is shaking and Leo is terrified! What did you do to her while I was gone?

Eleanor: I asked her to do simple chores in exchange for living in this mansion for free!

Connor: We are not living here for free, Mom! I have been paying half the mortgage directly into your bank account every month!

Sarah looked up at Connor with red, swollen eyes, her voice trembling as she wiped her nose with her sleeve.

Sarah: Connor, she said the house is entirely hers and that your father left nothing for us.

Connor: That is a complete lie, Sarah. I just came back from the courthouse with the lawyer.

Eleanor: Connor, do not start this drama in front of the child!

Connor: No, Mom, we are starting it right now because I have the actual court documents in this folder!

Eleanor's face went pale, her harsh expression faltering for the very first time since Connor stepped into the room. She glanced at the brown paper folder lying on the island counter, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides as she realized what he was holding. Connor held Sarah tighter, gently kissing the top of her wet hair while rubbing baby Leo's small back to soothe his quiet sobs.

Connor: We are leaving right now. Pack your bags, Sarah.

Eleanor: You cannot leave! You belong here in this home with me!

Connor: We are never staying another night under this roof with you.
