Chapter 2 of 6
His Mother Forced Her To Wash Dishes While Holding Baby
The Argument Escalates Fast
The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed ten times, ringing loudly through the silent house as Eleanor continued to pace behind Sarah. Every step of her expensive leather shoes on the hardwood floor sounded like a countdown to another round of harsh criticism and unfair demands. Sarah's arms were growing weaker by the minute as baby Leo began to squirm against her shoulder, clearly unsettled by the heavy atmosphere in the room.
Eleanor: Put the baby in his crib if you cannot scrub the pots with both hands.
Sarah: He is sick and crying, Eleanor, I cannot just leave him upstairs alone while he feels like this.
Eleanor: My sons were raised with discipline, and they never cried like this over a little temperature.
Sarah: He is only six months old, he needs comfort and his mother right now.
Eleanor: He needs a mother who keeps a clean home instead of making excuses every single hour of the day.
Sarah took a slow breath, trying hard to suppress the anger rising deep inside her chest after weeks of quiet endurance. She placed the sponge down on the edge of the sink and turned around slowly to face her mother-in-law head-on. The white crown molding and framed paintings on the wall seemed to shrink around them as the tension reached a boiling point.
Sarah: Why do you treat me like this every time Connor steps out of the house?
Eleanor: I am simply setting standards for this home, which happens to belong to me.
Sarah: This house belonged to your husband, and Connor told me the inheritance was meant to be shared equally.
Eleanor: You know nothing about my husband's will or what belongs to this family!
Sarah: Then why do you hide the legal documents in the locked desk upstairs whenever the lawyer calls?
Eleanor's face flushed with sudden anger, her eyes narrowing as she pointed a sharp finger directly at Sarah's nose. Her posture stiffened, dropping all polished composure as she raised her voice to a harsh, sharp echo that bounced off the kitchen walls.
Eleanor: Do not you dare speak to me about legal documents in my own kitchen!
Sarah: I saw the letter from the probate lawyer on the front hall table yesterday morning, Eleanor.
Eleanor: That letter is none of your business and you had no right touching my mail!
Sarah: It was addressed to Connor as the primary beneficiary of his father's trust fund!
Eleanor: I said do it!
The shout shattered the remaining quiet in the room, making baby Leo burst into loud, terrified screams against Sarah's chest. Sarah backed up against the edge of the wet counter, holding the baby tight while tears spilled over her cheeks, helpless against the older woman's unyielding fury. Eleanor stepped closer, her hand still raised in anger, completely ignoring the crying baby as she pointed down toward the full sink.
Eleanor: Clean those dishes right now or I will have you removed from this property today!
Sarah: Please stop shouting, you are scaring the baby!
Eleanor: I do not care! You will obey my rules in this house or leave with nothing!
