Chapter 4 of 5

A Father Discovers The Horrific Secret Kept In His House

The Confrontation At The Door

The heavy front door swung open wide as two uniformed police officers stepped inside the foyer quickly. Their hands rested near their belts as they scanned the dramatic scene unfolding in the bright hallway. Sarah stood near the dining room doorway holding baby Leo, her tears finally starting to stop. Mark stood in the center of the hall with his hands held out open and visible.

Officer Miller: Nobody move! What is going on inside this house right now?

Mark: Officer, my sister broke into my safe and stole five hundred thousand dollars.

Ellen: He is lying! He assaulted me when I tried to leave the house!

Sarah: That is not true! She forged adoption papers to steal my baby!

Officer Miller: Ma'am, stay right where you are while we secure the room.

The second officer walked toward Ellen and instructed her to turn around slowly near the wall. Ellen glared at Mark with pure venom, her fingers twitching with rage as she backed against the wallpaper. Officer Miller picked up the folded legal paper from the floor where Sarah had dropped it during the fight. He scanned the stamped text with a trained eye before looking up at Ellen's bitter face.

Officer Miller: This document has a fake state court seal pressed on the front.

Ellen: I found that paper inside Mark's desk drawer this morning!

Mark: Check the hallway camera footage right on my phone, officer.

Officer Miller: Show me the footage right now, sir. Keep your hands visible.

Mark pulled his smartphone out slowly and opened the home security application with a quick thumb tap. He handed the glowing screen over to Officer Miller, who watched the midnight footage closely. The clear video showed Ellen entering the dark office, opening the iron safe, and taking cash and files. She then printed the forged adoption papers directly from the desktop computer near the window.

Officer Miller: The video evidence is crystal clear, ma'am. Put your hands behind your back.

Ellen: You cannot arrest me! This is a private family matter!

Officer Miller: Stealing half a million dollars and forging legal documents is a federal crime.

Sarah: Take her away from my baby right now, please!

Ellen: You will regret this day for the rest of your life, Mark!

The second officer placed steel handcuffs around Ellen's wrists with a sharp metallic clicking sound that filled the room. Ellen struggled against the officer's grip, but she was quickly led out toward the parked police cruiser outside. Sarah let out a long breath of relief and sank against the hallway wall as tears flooded her eyes. Mark walked over to his wife immediately and wrapped his arms around her and the infant.

Mark: It is over now, Sarah. We are totally safe inside our home.

Sarah: I am so sorry I ever doubted your love for us, Mark.

Mark: She used your deepest fear as a mother to manipulate your mind.

Sarah: I was so scared that someone was going to take Leo away from me.

Mark: Nobody will ever take him away from us. I promise you that.

Baby Leo cooed softly as Mark gently kissed Sarah's warm forehead near the sunlit hallway doorway. Officer Miller walked back inside after securing Ellen inside the back seat of the police car. He held a small black notepad in his right hand to finish writing the official police report. The terrifying storm that almost destroyed their happy family was finally coming to a complete close.
