Chapter 2 of 5
A Father Discovers The Horrific Secret Kept In His House
The Traitor In The Hallway
Mark turned his eyes directly toward his younger sister Ellen with complete disbelief. Ellen stood rigid near the entryway, her fingers clutching the plastic suitcase handles very tightly. She had moved into their guest house six months ago after losing her job at the local law firm. Mark had paid her monthly rent, brought her food, and welcomed her like family.
Mark: Ellen, what did you tell my wife about our baby?
Ellen: I only told her the truth you were trying to hide from everyone!
Mark: You are lying to her to destroy my marriage and my life!
Sarah: Do not yell at her, Mark! She showed me the official legal stamp!
Mark: That document is completely forged and you know it, Ellen!
Sarah held baby Leo tighter against her shoulder as the newborn began to squirm quietly. Mark wanted to reach out and hold his family, but Sarah flinched back instantly. Her eyes were red from crying all night long while Mark was fast asleep upstairs. The tension inside the bright hallway felt heavy enough to stop anyone from breathing normally.
Mark: Sarah, think about this logically for just one minute, please.
Sarah: I checked the trust fund account online this morning, Mark!
Mark: What about the trust fund account for Leo?
Sarah: Five hundred thousand dollars was transferred out at midnight!
Mark: I never touched that bank account after we set it up last month!
Mark reached into his suit pocket to grab his smartphone to check his online balance. As soon as his hand moved, Ellen stepped between Mark and the front glass door. Her expression turned cold and sharp, completely different from her gentle act moments earlier. Mark realized his own sister was orchestrating a massive theft right before his eyes.
Ellen: Do not come any closer, Mark, or I will call the police!
Mark: You stole the trust fund money using my private security passwords!
Ellen: You have no proof of anything you are saying right now!
Sarah: Stop fighting over money while our child is in danger!
Mark: Sarah, she is robbing us and tricking you into running away!
Sarah looked back and forth between Mark and Ellen with deep confusion creeping into her mind. She pulled a folded white paper out of her green dress pocket with trembling fingers. The official red stamp of the state court sat visible at the top of the crisp sheet. Mark recognized the legal paper format instantly from his years working near corporate lawyers.
Mark: Let me look at that paper for five seconds, Sarah.
Sarah: Ellen said you would try to destroy the evidence if you touched it!
Mark: Read the name of the signing lawyer at the bottom right now!
Sarah: It says attorney Richard Vance from the downtown county office.
Mark: Vance was disbarred three years ago for committing bank fraud, Sarah!
Sarah stopped moving and looked down at the dark signatures at the bottom of the paper. Ellen suddenly reached forward and tried to snatch the paper straight out of Sarah's hands. The quick sudden movement made baby Leo cry out loudly in the quiet residential hallway. Mark stepped forward to block Ellen from touching his wife or his small son.
Mark: Get your hands away from my wife right now, Ellen!
Ellen: Give me that document back right now, Sarah!
Sarah: Why are you trying to rip it out of my hands, Ellen?
Ellen: Because we need to get to the airport before he stops us!
Mark: Nobody is going to any airport until the sheriff arrives here!
Far down the quiet suburban street, the faint sound of rising police sirens cut through the morning air. Ellen's face instantly lost all color as she looked toward the open driveway outside. Mark stood firm in the middle of the hallway, blocking the only path to the front door. The real truth was finally beginning to surface through the dark web of deceit.
