Chapter 3 of 5
A Father Discovers The Horrific Secret Kept In His House
Uncovering The Forged Papers
The distant sound of sirens grew louder with every passing second down the main neighborhood road. Sarah backed away from Ellen, holding baby Leo protectively against her chest with both arms. She looked down at the court document in her hand with growing doubt and rising terror. The neat signatures and formal seals suddenly looked completely fake under the bright hallway lights.
Sarah: Ellen, why did you tell me Mark was not the real father?
Ellen: Because he forged the hospital birth certificate to trick the state!
Mark: Look at her face, Sarah! She is lying to cover her own crime!
Ellen: Shut up, Mark! You ruined my career three years ago!
Mark: You ruined your own career when you stole client money from the firm!
Sarah took a deep breath as the horrifying pieces of the puzzle began to fit together. Ellen had been disbarred from her law firm after Mark refused to cover up her financial crimes. She had lived on Mark's charity for months while secretly planning a devastating revenge against his household. The stolen half-million dollars from baby Leo's fund was her escape money to leave the country.
Sarah: You used me to get access to Leo's inheritance account?
Ellen: He owed me that money for turning his back on his own sister!
Mark: I offered to help you rebuild your life the honest way, Ellen!
Ellen: Honest work pays nothing compared to what you made this year!
Sarah: You tried to make me abandon my husband for money?!
Ellen grabbed one of the heavy black suitcases and moved aggressively toward the oak front door. Mark stepped directly into her path, his wide shoulders blocking the narrow wooden exit frame completely. Ellen screamed in fury and dropped the suitcase handle onto the hard wooden floorboards with a loud crash. She lunged forward to push past Mark with all her weight and speed.
Mark: You are not leaving this house until the police see these fake papers!
Ellen: Get out of my way, Mark, or I will ruin you completely!
Mark: You cannot hurt my family anymore, Ellen! It is over now!
Sarah: Mark, watch out! She has something in her jacket pocket!
Mark reacted instantly as Ellen reached into her dark coat side pocket for a small metallic object. He grabbed her wrist firmly and pushed her back toward the living room rug away from Sarah. The metallic object clattered across the glossy floorboards and slid under the front entry table. It was a duplicate set of keys to Mark's private home office safe upstairs.
Mark: You took my safe keys while I was asleep last night!
Ellen: You left everything wide open because you trusted your sweet sister!
Sarah: I was so stupid to believe a single word you told me today!
Mark: You were trying to protect our baby, Sarah. I do not blame you.
Sarah: I almost lost you because I panicked over a piece of paper!
Red and blue emergency lights began flashing through the large glass windows of the front living room. Two police cruisers pulled up onto the concrete driveway with their tires screeching against the stone edge. Ellen looked around the entry hall like a trapped animal searching for an open window or door. There was nowhere left for her to run as the sirens finally cut off outside.
Mark: Stay behind me, Sarah. Keep Leo safe in the dining room.
Sarah: Please be careful, Mark! She is completely out of her mind!
Ellen: They will never convict me without direct proof from the bank!
Mark: The security cameras in my office recorded everything you did last night.
Ellen froze completely as Mark pointed to the small black camera hidden inside the corner molding above. She realized her perfect plan had been recorded in high definition from the very beginning. Her face twisted in bitter defeat as heavy footsteps bounded up the front porch steps outside.
