Chapter 1 of 5

A Cruel Rich Man Kicked A Poor Boy's Bowl

The Boy On The Sidewalk

The morning sun was shining brightly over the busy downtown street, making the clean glass windows of the high-end luxury clothing store glow like diamonds. People dressed in expensive clothes walked quickly back and forth on the wide sidewalk, holding warm coffees and talking loudly on their phones. Nobody seemed to notice the tiny child sitting on the cold concrete right next to the store entrance. His name was Leo, and he was only nine years old, wearing a faded jacket that was three sizes too big for his thin frame.

Leo held a small metal bowl between his dirty fingers, hoping that someone might drop a spare quarter or a loose dollar bill inside so he could buy a warm sandwich before nightfall. Most shoppers walked right past him without looking down, stepping around him as if he were just a piece of trash left on the sidewalk. Leo kept his chin tucked low into his collar, feeling a deep, quiet sadness that hurt worse than the cold morning air hitting his pale face.

Suddenly, heavy black leather dress shoes stopped directly in front of Leo's tiny metal bowl. The child looked up slowly, his big blue eyes filled with hope, thinking that maybe this wealthy gentleman was about to help him buy breakfast. The man was standing tall in a perfectly tailored Italian designer suit, wearing dark shiny sunglasses and a heavy gold watch that caught the sunlight. His face was twisted into a look of deep disgust as he stared down at the trembling child sitting at his feet.

Arrogant Man: GET OUT OF MY WAY, YOU RAT!

Before Leo could even whisper a response or pull his legs back, the man pulled his right leg back and kicked the small metal bowl with all his strength. The metal dish flew through the air, clattering loudly against the stone wall before tumbling across the pavement. Dozens of shiny silver quarters and pennies spilled everywhere, rolling into the dirty street gutters and slipping between the sidewalk cracks. Leo gasped in terror, dropping to his knees instantly as hot tears began streaming down his dust-covered cheeks.

Beggar Boy: No! Please, sir! That was my only food money for the whole week!

Arrogant Man: You smell like garbage and you're ruining the view outside my favorite boutique. Clean up your trash and get lost before I call the cops to drag you away!

The man snorted with laughter, wiping the toe of his expensive shoe on the ground as if touching the child's bowl had contaminated his expensive leather. Leo stayed on his hands and knees, weeping silently as his tiny fingers reached out frantically to collect the scattered coins before they rolled away into the street drain. The people walking past kept moving, ignoring the weeping boy and the cruel man standing over him like a ruler. Nobody stopped to help the boy pick up his money, and nobody spoke up to call the bully out for his cruelty.

Leo felt completely invisible and utterly helpless, trapped in a cold world where rich people could crush poor children without anyone ever caring. The man stood there with his arms crossed over his chest, enjoying the sight of the little boy crying on the ground. He pulled out a high-end cigar, tapping it against his palm while sneering at the small child crawling near his feet. He believed he owned the entire sidewalk and everything on it, completely unaware that a sleek black sedan had just pulled up directly to the curb right beside him.
