Chapter 3 of 6
A Billionaire Father Rescues His Daughter Locked Inside A Pantry
A Web Of Lies Exposed
The heavy words hung in the air like a storm cloud, thick with accusation and danger. Richard stood up slowly from the floor, holding Lily close to his chest while she wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. The little girl rested her chin on his shoulder, still sniffling softly as she held her brown teddy bear under her arm. Richard's eyes swept across the kitchen, looking from the pale face of the butler to the nervous posture of his fiancée. Every detail in the room suddenly felt like a piece of a dangerous puzzle that he needed to solve immediately.
Marsha adjusted the collar of her maroon blouse, taking a step toward Richard with her arms extended in a gentle gesture. She smoothed her hair back, trying her best to put on a soft, comforting smile, but her eyes remained wide and anxious. She looked at the heavy door and then back at Richard, shaking her head with a look of profound sorrow that seemed almost too rehearsed to be completely genuine.
Marsha: Richard darling, thank goodness she is okay! You should sit her down on the sofa right away.
Richard: Stay right where you are, Marsha. Do not take another step toward us.
Marsha: What are you talking about? I am the one who noticed she was missing and called for help!
Richard: You knew she was in there, but how long did you wait before saying a word to me?
Marsha gasped softly, hurt by the direct accusation in his loud, commanding voice. She backed away toward the kitchen island, resting her manicured hand against the cool dark granite surface. Meanwhile, Thomas stood motionless near the doorway, his head bowed low and his white-gloved hands folded tight behind his back. The silence in the large home was suffocating, broken only by the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the quiet breathing of the traumatized child.
Richard carried Lily over to the breakfast table, setting her down gently on a soft cushioned chair. He picked up a clean glass, filled it with fresh water from the dispenser, and handed it to his daughter with a tender smile. Lily took a small sip, her hands still shaking slightly, but the presence of her father seemed to give her courage. Richard knelt down beside her chair so he was looking directly into her sweet, tear-stained eyes at eye level.
Richard: Sweetheart, can you tell Daddy what happened today? How did you get into the dark room?
Little Lily: I was looking for my drawing book, Daddy... The one with the glitter cover.
Richard: And did you walk into the pantry by yourself?
Little Lily: No... The lady told me my book was on the high shelf in the back room.
Richard felt his entire body go rigid with a sudden, icy fury that burned brighter than any anger he had ever felt in his entire life. He slowly turned his head to look directly at Marsha, who froze in her tracks upon hearing the child's soft, honest words. The air in the kitchen grew instantly colder as the truth began to tear through the web of careful deceit that had been spun inside the mansion over the past few weeks.
Richard: Which lady told you that, Lily? Point to her for Daddy.
The little girl raised a small, trembling finger and pointed directly across the bright room, aiming straight at Marsha. Marsha's face completely lost all of its color, turning as white as the marble counter behind her. She opened her mouth to defend herself, her chest heaving as she tried to come up with an explanation, but no words came out of her throat. The illusion of the loving stepmother was completely shattered into a thousand sharp pieces right before their eyes.
Marsha: She is confused, Richard! She is just a little child who was scared in the dark!
Richard: She knows exactly who put her in there, Marsha!
Butler: Sir... I think there is something else you need to see from the security cabinet.
