Chapter 2 of 6
Woman Cuts off Free Money and Exposes Her Ungrateful Family
Confrontation in the Driveway
Claire rolled her suitcase down the smooth concrete driveway toward her luxury SUV parked right at the curb. Her father turned around, his face turning bright red as he saw her carrying all her belongings away. He raised his voice angrily, pointing his finger at her while the neighbors watched from across the street. He yelled about everything they had sacrificed for her when she was just a small child growing up. Claire kept moving forward, keeping her head held high and ignoring the sharp sting of his harsh words. She unlocked her vehicle with the remote key fob, preparing to load her heavy bag into the trunk.
Her older brother sprinted across the green grass, his sneakers squeaking sharply on the hard concrete driveway surface. He reached out with both hands and grabbed Claire's wrist forcefully, pulling her backward away from her car. The sudden pain shot up her arm, but she did not let out a single scream or cry. She spun around fast, using all her strength to break his tight grip on her slender wrist. Before he could react, she raised her right hand and slapped him hard across the left cheek. The sound of the slap echoed across the quiet neighborhood, shocking everyone into absolute silence for a moment.
Brother: Did you just slap me? Are you totally out of your mind?
Claire: Don't ever put your hands on me again, or you will regret it.
Brother: You think you are better than us just because you have a trust fund?
Claire: I earned every single dollar myself while you sat on the couch.
Her brother held his red cheek in utter disbelief, stepping back two paces away from her fierce gaze. Her cousin was currently standing near the police vehicle, surrounded by two stern sheriff deputies holding silver handcuffs. He started crying loudly, begging Claire to pay his legal bail money so he would not spend the night in jail. He shouted that she promised to protect the family business and keep everyone safe from harm and trouble. Claire turned her gaze toward him, her face completely cold and devoid of any pity or sympathy left. She looked at her furious father and weeping mother who were both staring at her with wide eyes.
Cousin: Claire, please! You promised you would help me out of this!
Claire: I never promised to cover your crimes. You made your bed, now sleep in it.
Father: She is heartless! Look at what money has done to our daughter!
Claire: Money did not change me, Dad. It just showed me who you really are.
The deputies guided her panicked cousin into the back seat of the police cruiser and shut the door firmly. Her mother rushed forward, tears streaming down her cheeks as she tried to reach for Claire's jacket sleeve. Claire stepped back smoothly, avoiding her mother's touch as she opened her black designer handbag with a zip. The quiet clicks of her bag opening sounded loud against the heavy atmosphere hanging over the entire driveway. She reached deep into the side pocket where she kept the family expense cards linked to her account. The climax of years of hidden resentment was reaching its final breaking point right in front of them.
