Chapter 1 of 6
Woman Cuts off Free Money and Exposes Her Ungrateful Family
The Boiling Point at Barbecue
The smell of grilled burgers filled the warm summer air across the sunny backyard. It was supposed to be a normal weekend family party, but tension was brewing beneath the surface. Claire stood near the picnic table, holding a glass of iced tea while her family laughed loudly. She had worked twelve hours a day for five years to build her tech business from scratch. Every month, she sent thousands of dollars to her parents to help pay their suburban home mortgage. She also bought her brother a brand new car and covered her cousin's endless credit card debt without complaining. But whenever she visited, no one ever asked how she was feeling or if she was happy. They only talked about their unpaid bills, their upcoming expensive vacations, and new electronics they wanted her to buy.
Claire watched her brother show off his new watch to their uncle near the outdoor grill. She had paid for that watch just last week after he claimed he needed money for rent. Her mother walked over with a sweet smile that Claire knew meant another request was coming instantly. Her mother rested a hand on Claire's shoulder and cleared her throat softly before speaking up. She explained that her cousin needed another big loan because he got into legal trouble again last night. Claire felt a cold knot form in her stomach as she stared at her mother's hopeful eyes. She realized in that very moment that her family viewed her like a personal bank machine.
Mother: He is your family, Claire, and family always helps each other out.
Claire: I paid off his debt last month, Mom. Where does it end?
Mother: You have millions in the bank, so why are you being so selfish?
Claire placed her iced tea glass on the wooden table with a loud thud that made her mother jump back. Her father walked over, wiping grease from his hands with a paper towel while frowning deeply at her. He spat out harsh words, accusing her of forgetting where she came from and growing arrogant with money. Claire looked around the patio at her brother, aunt, and cousins, who were all nodding in agreement. Not a single person stepped in to defend her or thank her for years of constant financial support. She felt a wave of clarity wash over her as the final illusion of family love shattered completely. She turned around without saying another word and walked straight inside the house toward the guest room upstairs.
She packed her leather suitcase quickly, tossing in her clothes, shoes, and toiletries with fast, decisive hands. She grabbed her designer handbag and zipped it close, her mind clearer than it had ever been before. As she zipped the bag, she heard loud voices shouting downstairs near the front driveway outside the home. Two local police cars had pulled up to the curb with their red and blue lights flashing brightly. Claire walked down the stairs calmly, trailing her heavy rolling suitcase behind her step by step. Her family was gathered on the lawn, arguing loudly with two police officers standing near the front porch. The moment had finally come to cut the ties that had kept her trapped for so many years.
