Chapter 5 of 6

The Diner Waitress Who Recognized Her Bosses Missing Son

The Mountain Cabin Secret

The old pickup truck roared up the winding mountain pass, its engine straining against the steep incline as dark pine trees blurred past the side windows. Clara kept her eyes locked on the dirt road ahead, steering the heavy vehicle with smooth, practiced hands. In the passenger seat, Vincent held the old brass key tightly in his fist, his heart pounding in his chest as the reality of his past continued to sink in.

Behind them, through the dusty rear window, Vincent could see the black luxury sedan sweeping through the mountain turns, slowly closing the distance between them. The powerful engine of the modern car was making quick work of the steep incline. Clara glanced at the rearview mirror, her mouth set in a hard, determined line as she pushed the old truck as fast as it would go without overheating the engine.

Vincent: They are gaining on us, Clara! We have less than two miles before the road dead-ends!

Clara: That dead-end is exactly where we need to be, Vincent!

Vincent: What is at the end of this trail?

Clara: Your mother’s real estate home! The cottage she bought with her emergency savings!

Clara jerked the steering wheel hard to the left, taking the truck off the main dirt road and plunging down a narrow, hidden overgrown trail lined with thick evergreen bushes. Branches scraped against the truck's red paint with sharp, screeching sounds. The black sedan overshot the hidden turn, its brake lights flashing red in the distance as the guards tried to stop their heavy vehicle on the loose gravel surface.

The truck bumped violently over tree roots before coming to a sudden stop in a small, sunny clearing surrounded by tall pine trees. In the center of the clearing stood a modest stone and timber cabin with a green tin roof. It looked completely abandoned, its windows covered with heavy wooden shutters, but the building was sturdy and well-kept despite thirty years of harsh mountain weather.

Clara: Out of the truck, fast! Grab the crowbar from under your seat!

Vincent: What are we looking for inside?

Clara: Under the floorboards near the stone fireplace! The original adoption and estate papers!

They scrambled out of the truck and ran up the wooden steps of the cabin porch. Vincent shoved the heavy brass key into the old door lock. It turned with a dry, stiff click, and the heavy oak door swung open with a slow, creaking groan. The inside smelled of dry cedar, old paper, and long-forgotten memories. Vincent felt an immediate, overwhelming wave of emotion as he stepped inside; the walls were covered with framed drawings of a small boy playing in a garden.

Vincent: She drew these... these are drawings of me.

Clara: She thought about you every single day of her life, Vincent. She never stopped loving you.

Vincent knelt down near the massive stone fireplace, using the heavy iron crowbar to pry open the loose wooden floorboards. Beneath the dust, wrapped inside a thick waterproof oilcloth, was a heavy steel cash box. Vincent used the second small key attached to the wooden tag to unlock it. Inside lay original hospital records, private detective reports, and a signed confession written in his mother's distinct handwriting detailing how Mr. Vance had orchestrated her forced institutionalization to gain control of her trust fund.

Vincent: It's all here. Every bank transaction, every illegal order signed by Vance.

Clara: This is the proof you need to take back your life and put that monster in prison.
