Chapter 2 of 6
The Diner Waitress Who Recognized Her Bosses Missing Son
A Secret Saved In Brass
Vincent slowly picked up the heavy brass key, feeling the cold, aged metal against his palm. His mind raced back to his childhood inside his family's massive estate. He had been raised by a stern father who ran a multi-million dollar logistics corporation with an iron fist. Whenever Vincent asked about his mother, his father would simply hand him a framed portrait and tell him she was fragile, sick, and gone. There were no detailed medical records, no grave visits, and no extended family members allowed near the house.
As Vincent stared at the key, he remembered finding a locked box in his father's study when he was ten years old. Inside that box was a legal settlement document with the name Clara rewritten in blue ink near the bottom margins, right above a heavy non-disclosure clause. His father had slapped him for touching those papers and warned him to never look into his family history again. Now, standing in a diner hundreds of miles away, the missing piece of his life was staring back at him with tears in her eyes.
Vincent: Why would she need to escape? My father was a respected businessman.
Clara: He was a dangerous man who wanted her inheritance and her share of the family trust fund.
Vincent: My mother did not have a trust fund. Everything belonged to my father’s firm.
Clara: Because he forced her to sign it away while she was trapped under heavy sedation!
The dark-suited man standing closest to the diner entrance suddenly cleared his throat. He took two steps forward, his eyes locked onto the back of Vincent's head with a cold, unnatural intensity. Clara noticed the movement immediately and pushed her body against the counter, her eyes wide with fresh fear. She recognized the man’s stiff posture and the cold demeanor he carried. He was not just a hired bodyguard; he was a corporate enforcer working directly for the family estate.
Clara: Vincent, listen to me carefully right now. Who hired those men behind you?
Vincent: My father’s legal team assigned them to handle my personal security last month.
Clara: They are not protecting you. They are keeping you from finding out the truth before the final estate papers are signed tomorrow.
Vincent felt a cold chill run down his spine. His father had passed away two weeks ago, leaving Vincent as the sole legal heir to the vast corporate empire. But the final probate court hearing was scheduled for the next morning. If Vincent failed to show up, or if new legal heirs were discovered, the entire fortune and controlling shares would instantly pass to his father’s long-time legal advisor, Mr. Vance.
Vincent: Mr. Vance sent them. He said there were security threats against the estate.
Clara: The man who tried to kill your mother thirty years ago... is standing right behind you.
Vincent did not turn around immediately. He kept his eyes locked on Clara, using the reflective surface of the metallic diner counter to glance at the dark-suited man behind him. The man’s hand was resting near the inner pocket of his dark jacket, his face completely devoid of any emotion. Vincent’s mind connected the final dots. The security guards were not there to shield him from danger; they were there to ensure he never reached the courtroom alive if he started asking questions.
Vincent: What happened to her after she escaped, Clara?
Clara: I drove her to the bus station myself and gave her that key to a safe house in the mountains.
Vincent: Did she survive? Is my mother still alive today?
Clara: She survived long enough to write down the truth and put the original land deeds into a lockbox.
