Chapter 4 of 6

The Diner Waitress Who Recognized Her Bosses Missing Son

The Escape From The Diner

Clara didn't wait for the guard to make his next move. She swung the heavy cast-iron skillet with all the strength left in her arms, slamming it hard against the side of the head guard's shoulder. The metal hit him with a loud, dull thud, knocking the large man sideways into a row of vinyl diner booths. Napkin dispensers and condiment bottles crashed onto the floor, scattering glass and red ketchup across the hardwood oak boards.

Clara: Vincent, run through the kitchen back door! Go now!

Vincent: I am not leaving you here alone with them!

Clara: The key fits the safe house in Oak Creek! Everything you need to destroy Vance is inside!

The second guard lunged forward to grab Vincent's jacket, but Vincent threw a heavy right punch directly into the guard's jaw. The shock of the impact rattled Vincent's arm all the way up to his shoulder, but the guard stumbled backward, tripping over a knocked-over wooden chair. Vincent grabbed Clara by the arm, pulling her toward the swinging stainless steel doors that led directly into the kitchen area.

They burst through the double doors just as the head guard scrambled back up to his feet, shouting curses into his small radio headset. The diner kitchen was hot and smelled of frying oil and fresh bread. Clara guided Vincent past the large metal prep tables toward the narrow wooden exit door at the back of the building. She grabbed her heavy winter coat and a set of car keys off a hook near the door.

Vincent: Where does this door lead?

Clara: To the back alley where I park my old pickup truck!

Vincent: They have high-speed luxury sedans. They will catch us on the main highway in minutes!

Clara: They don't know these back dirt roads like I do, Vincent. Now get in!

They pushed through the heavy rear door, stepping into the crisp afternoon air of the alleyway. A faded red pickup truck was parked near the trash dumpsters. Clara unlocked the passenger side door, pushing Vincent inside before scrambling into the driver's seat. She shoved the key into the ignition and turned it, making the old V8 engine roar to life with a loud, rattling rumble that shook the whole cab.

Behind them, the rear kitchen door burst open. The two dark-suited guards ran into the alleyway, one of them drawing his firearm and pointing it toward the truck's rear tires. Clara slammed the truck into reverse, stomping hard on the gas pedal. The heavy steel rear bumper slammed directly into a row of metal trash dumpsters, sending them rolling straight into the path of the oncoming guards.

Security Guard: Stop the truck! Shoot the tires!

Clara: Hold on tight, young man! This ride is going to get bumpy!

Clara shifted into drive, flooring the gas pedal as the truck tires spun violently against the loose gravel. The pickup surged forward, breaking through the small wooden alley gate and bursting onto the quiet country road just as a gunshot rang out behind them, shattering the truck's side mirror into a thousand tiny glittering pieces.
