Chapter 4 of 5
She Crawled Toward The Button Before Her Husband Realized Everything
The Shadow From The Past
Before Reed could process her words, the grand double glass doors of the mansion crashed open with a violent metallic bang. Heavy glass shards scattered across the white marble floor like glittering ice as the lock gave way entirely. Through the doorway stepped an authoritative older Caucasian woman dressed in a sharp, tailored white blazer suit and dark designer sunglasses, moving with absolute power and unshakeable confidence.
She was flanked by six armed tactical officers who immediately flooded into the grand entryway, their boots crunching over the shattered glass. The older woman slowly brought her hand up, taking off her sunglasses with a cold, ruthless smirk that cut straight through the tense air of the room.
Evelyn: I've been waiting fifteen years for this, Reed!
Reed: No... no! You're supposed to be dead! I saw the plane crash reports myself!
Evelyn: You saw what I wanted you to see, you pathetic, greedy worm. Did you really think my late brother would leave his daughter's life entirely in your untrustworthy hands?
The older woman was Evelyn Vance, Marion's long-lost aunt and the senior managing trustee of the family estate. Fifteen years ago, after surviving a targeted sabotage attempt on her private jet, Evelyn had gone deep underground, faking her death to secretly monitor the corporate enemies and corrupt insiders who were trying to destroy the family business from within. She had worked silently behind the scenes alongside high-level federal prosecutors and top divorce lawyers to build an airtight legal trap around Reed.
Reed: Get out of my house! You have no legal standing here! I am Marion's legal husband!
Evelyn: Not anymore, Reed. Ten minutes ago, an emergency court order signed by a federal judge revoked your marital power of attorney and transferred complete authority over the estate back to me.
Chloe: I... I was just hired as a nurse! I didn't know anything about this!
Evelyn: Save your lies for the grand jury, sweetheart. We have had wiretaps on your personal phones for the last six weeks. We have audio recordings of every single conversation you two had about buying that slow-acting toxin on the dark web.
Reed's face drained of all color, his lips trembling as he looked around at the armed officers spreading across his living room. He turned toward the back patio doors, preparing to make a desperate run for the rear garden, but two tactical officers moved with lightning speed, lunging forward and tackling him directly onto the cold marble floor.
Reed: Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?! I own this company!
Officer: Shut up and stay down! Reed Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, grand larceny, and corporate fraud!
A sharp metallic clank echoed through the high-ceilinged room as heavy steel handcuffs clicked tightly around Reed's wrists. He struggled helplessly against the floor, his pristine white dress shirt getting covered in dirt and red juice stains as he screamed out curses that meant nothing anymore.
Reed: Marion! Tell them to stop! You love me! You can't do this to me!
Marion: Take him... out of my sight...
