Arrogant Salesman Slaps Poor Man Who Turns Out To Be Owner

The Unremarkable Man In Brown

The autumn sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the famous Fifth Avenue jewelry boutique. Light reflected off polished marble floors and crystal chandeliers hanging from high ceilings. It was the kind of place where normal people felt nervous just looking through the glass display cases. The air smelled of expensive perfume, fresh lilies, and subtle leather polish.

Among the sparkling cases stood Arthur Vance. He wore a heavy brown coat that looked ten years old, slightly frayed at the cuffs. His simple grey trousers and scuffed leather shoes made him stand out against the ultra-rich clients. He looked like an ordinary retired grandfather out for a quiet weekend stroll. But his blue eyes were sharp and clear as he examined a diamond necklace.

Behind the counter, two sales employees watched Arthur with obvious disdain. Chad, a young salesman wearing a tailored suit, folded his arms and sneered. He took pride in serving wealthy socialites and high-profile executives. To Chad, Arthur was an eyesore who threatened to lower the store status. Chad checked his luxury watch and turned to his coworker Sarah.

Chad: Look at this guy standing by the high-jewelry section. He is track marks on our clean floor.

Sarah: Just leave him alone, Chad. He is not hurting anyone by looking.

Chad: He is ruining the customer experience. Wealthy clients do not want to stand next to trash.

Arthur continued inspecting the diamond necklace without paying attention to the whispering employees. He touched the edge of the glass case gently, appreciating the fine craftsmanship. He remembered when this location was just a dream sketched on a paper napkin decades ago. He enjoyed visiting his stores unannounced, just to watch daily operations without formal security detail.

Chad straightened his silk tie and walked briskly over to Arthur. His shoes clacked sharply against the marble floor. He didn't offer a polite greeting or ask if Arthur needed assistance. Instead, he stood uncomfortably close to Arthur, towering over the shorter elderly man. His face was twisted into a scowl of pure arrogance and anger.

Chad: Hey! Old man! What do you think you are doing here?

Arthur: Good morning. I am just admiring the brilliant cut on this centerpiece necklace.

Chad: You don't belong in a place like this. Move along before I call security.

Arthur: The door was open, young man. I am simply enjoying the craftsmanship.

Chad: You can't afford a single link on that chain, let alone the diamonds. Get out!

Arthur did not flinch or raise his voice. He looked up into Chad's furious eyes with deep calm. That calm only seemed to irritate the young salesman even further. Chad felt embarrassed that other customers were starting to turn around and watch the interaction. He wanted to make a quick example of this quiet intruder to assert his authority.
