Chapter 3 of 6
A Rich Heir Slapped His Wealthy Bride At Their Gala
The Truth In The Open
Mark stared down at the glittering diamond necklace sitting inside the open silver clutch. He could feel his heart pounding against his ribs as years of trust turned into pure anger. Victoria stood before him, her lower lip trembling as she tried to put on a helpless face. But the evidence was lying right there in Mark's hands, clear as day for all guests. The woman he planned to marry was nothing more than a thief and a cruel bully.
Mark: You put this in your own purse and blamed an innocent worker!
Victoria: Mark, please listen to me! I was holding it for safekeeping!
Mark: Safekeeping? You just screamed at security to search Sarah's pockets!
Victoria: I was confused! I panicked because I wanted to protect your family honor!
Sarah: She wanted me to go to jail! I would have lost my job and my home!
Sarah sank down to her knees on the polished floor, tears streaming freely down her red cheeks. The sheer weight of the false accusation had broken her strength, but now relief washed over her. She looked up at Mark with trembling lips, her hands clasped together tightly in front of her chest. Mark looked down at Sarah and felt a deep shame for almost doubting her honesty. He turned back toward Victoria, his jaw set hard as his eyes narrowed with rage.
Without another word, Mark swung his hand forward and slapped Victoria hard across her cheek. The sharp metallic sound of the slap cracked through the large ballroom like a loud gunshot. Victoria gasped loudly as her head snapped to the side from the sudden force of the blow. She stumbled backward two steps, clutching her cheek as her eyes went wide with complete shock. The crowded room let out a collective gasp of utter surprise at the dramatic scene before them.
Victoria: HOW DARE YOU!
Mark: YOU LIED TO ME! You lied about everything from the very start!
Victoria: It was just a stupid necklace! My family is broke, Mark! I needed the money!
Mark: You tried to destroy a poor woman's life just to pay your own debts!
Sarah: I told you I was innocent! I told everyone I did not do it!
Victoria's glamourous face twisted into a mask of pure panic as tear trails ruined her thick makeup. The high society guests pulled out their phones, snapping photos and recording videos of her public fall. She looked around desperately for help, but her wealthy friends turned their backs on her in disgust. No one was going to defend a woman who stole family heirlooms and framed housekeepers. Her reputation in the city was completely ruined within a matter of minutes.
Mark stepped away from Victoria, turning his full attention down to the sobbing maid on the floor. He dropped the silver purse onto a side table and reached his hand down to Sarah. He held her hand gently and helped her stand up on her feet in front of everyone. Sarah wiped her eyes with her clean white apron, breathing a long sigh of utter relief. Mark smiled at her softly, showing the entire room where true honor actually belonged tonight.
