Chapter 4 of 5
A Father Returns Home To Discover His Daughter Is Starving
Exposing the Monster
The words spoken into the phone sounded like a death sentence for Evelyn's place in high society and her entire life. She fell to her knees on the polished floor, her expensive beige dress spreading out around her like a mess of rags. She began to cry fake, theatrical tears, pleading with David to put the phone down and talk to her in private. She begged him to think about the family reputation and how a public arrest would ruin their good name forever. But David did not listen to a single word coming out of the mouth of the woman who harmed his child. He stood like a tall rock, waiting for the authorities to arrive at the scene.
Within ten minutes, the sound of loud police sirens echoed from the street outside the front windows of the hotel hall. Two uniform police officers and two paramedics rushed through the heavy wooden doors, pushing through the crowd of shocked guests. The paramedics immediately saw the state of little Lily and stepped forward with a small warm blanket and a bottle of water. They gently checked her tiny pulse, her thin arms, and the dark bruise marks hidden under her oversized dress. One of the paramedics looked up at David with a grim face, confirming that the child was severely malnourished and needed urgent medical care. David held Lily's small hand while they checked her over.
Officer Miller: Sir, are you the one who called emergency services regarding this child?
David: Yes, officer. I am her father. I have been paying my mother five thousand dollars a month to care for her.
Officer Miller: Ma'am, stand up right now. You are coming with us for questioning regarding child endangerment and abuse.
Evelyn: You can't touch me! This is a private family matter! I am an important person in this city!
The police officer did not care about her money, her dress, or her status among the wealthy citizens in the room. He pulled Evelyn up from the floor, grabbed her hands firmly behind her back, and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. The sharp metallic sound of the cuffs closing made the crowd break out into loud murmurs of approval and relief. Evelyn's new husband took off his wedding ring, set it down on a nearby table, and walked out the back exit without looking at her once. Evelyn screamed at the top of her lungs, fighting against the officer as she was led out past her former friends.
David carried Lily out of the hotel, accompanied by the kind female paramedic who kept comforting the frightened little girl. They loaded Lily into the back of the white ambulance, and David sat right beside her, holding her cold fingers tightly. The vehicle drove through the city streets with its lights flashing, heading straight toward the central children's hospital downtown. Inside the quiet back of the ambulance, Lily looked up at David with wide, tired eyes that were still wet with tears. She reached out her tiny hand and touched his face gently, making sure he was real and not just a dream.
Lily: Are you going to leave me again, Daddy?
David: Never again, my sweet girl. I am staying right here with you forever.
Lily: Grandma said you forgot about me because I was bad.
David: She lied to you, baby. I thought about you every single minute of every single day.
David kissed her small forehead, feeling the hot tears spilling over his own cheeks as he held her against his chest. He made a quiet vow to himself that he would never let anyone hurt her or put her in danger ever again. He would quit his job on the oil rigs, find a safe local job, and rebuild their life together from scratch. The ambulance pulled up to the emergency room doors of the hospital, where a team of caring nurses was waiting for them. They brought a wheelchair, but David insisted on carrying his daughter inside his own arms all the way to her room.
