Chapter 2 of 5
A Father Returns Home To Discover His Daughter Is Starving
The Ballroom Confrontation
David walked forward like a man moving through a bad dream, ignoring the people who turned to look at him. His eyes remained locked on his little daughter, who was holding a stale crust of bread with her thin hands. Her arms were covered in light dust, and her shoes were tiny plastic sandals that were two sizes too small. As David stepped closer, he saw that she was chewing on the dry bread slowly, looking terrified of everything around her. Tears welled up in his eyes as he dropped his heavy leather bag straight onto the polished hardwood floor. The loud thud made a few nearby guests turn their heads in mild surprise.
David: Lily? Is that really you, my baby?
The small girl lifted her head slowly, her pale face showing deep lines of exhaustion that no child should ever have. When her light brown eyes met David's face, her lower lip started to tremble with pure emotion. She dropped the piece of bread onto the floor and stood up on her shaky legs, looking at him with wonder. She did not run at first because she seemed too weak and scared to move quickly across the open room. David fell down to his knees on the hard floor and reached out his arms toward her with everything he had. The sight of her tiny, fragile frame broke the last bit of control inside his aching chest.
Lily: Daddy? You came back for me?
David gathered her small body into his arms and lifted her up against his chest, holding her as tight as he could. She felt light as a feather, far too light for a child who was supposed to be four years old. Her tiny hands grabbed onto the lapels of his black suit jacket as if she was afraid he might vanish. She buried her face into his neck and began to cry with heavy, breathless sobs that shook her entire frame. The sound of her crying cut through the smooth classical music playing from the speakers on the side wall. David held her head gently, feeling her thin ribs right through the cheap fabric of her dress.
David: WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!
His voice roared through the vast ballroom like a clap of thunder, stopping the violin music and stopping all speech instantly. The wealthy guests turned around in total shock, dropping their glass cups and staring at the man standing near the cake. Evelyn froze on the raised stage, her glass of champagne hovering right near her lips as her face turned pale. Her new husband looked confused, glancing between Evelyn and the large man who was holding a weeping, dirty child. A heavy silence fell over the entire room, broken only by the loud, painful sobs coming from little Lily's chest. David's eyes burned with a pure, unstoppable anger as he stepped toward the stage.
Evelyn: PUT HER DOWN! THAT CHILD DOES NOT BELONG HERE!
Evelyn stepped down from the stage quickly, her heavy beaded dress making a swishing sound as she walked toward them. Her face was twisted into a look of absolute disgust as she pointed a manicured finger at her own granddaughter. She did not show a single drop of warmth or motherly care toward David or the helpless child in his arms. Instead, she looked around at her rich friends with deep embarrassment, trying to cover up the horrible scene in front of them. Her voice was sharp and arrogant, echoing off the high ceiling of the expensive hotel ballroom. David stared at his mother as if she were a total stranger he had never seen before.
David: She is my daughter, Mom! Look at her! She is starving!
Evelyn: You are ruining my special day, David! Get that dirty brat out of this hall right now before security comes!
David: WHERE HAS THE $5,000 I SEND EVERY MONTH GONE?!
David pushed his way closer to her, his large body shaking with an overwhelming rage that made guests step back. He held Lily tightly with his left arm while pointing his right hand directly at his mother's face. The crowd began to murmur in hushed, shocked tones as the words about money started floating through the room. Five thousand dollars a month was a massive amount of money, yet the child looked like she had not eaten properly in months. Evelyn's eyes flickered with panic for a split second before she tightened her jaw and sneered back at her son. She tried to reach out and grab Lily's arm to drag her away.
Lily: DADDY... GRANDMA IS THE ONE WHO...
