Chapter 2 of 5
A Father Discovers His Wife's Secret Behind The Wall
The Money Behind The Wall
Mark felt his breath catch in his throat as he kept his eye pressed against the wood.
The air inside the hallway suddenly felt heavy and extremely difficult for him to breathe.
He watched Sarah pull thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills out of a black leather duffel bag.
She placed the cash carefully onto the wooden desk and counted each bundle out loud.
Her hands were moving fast as if she was in a massive hurry to hide everything away.
Mark knew their family finances were supposed to be completely shared and totally open between them.
They had spent months arguing over their tight budget and the rising cost of their home mortgage.
Sarah had told him just last week that her small business was barely making any profit.
She had even asked him to take out a personal loan to cover their monthly utility bills.
Yet here she was sitting in a secret room surrounded by thousands of crisp new bills.
Mark watched her pick up her mobile phone and hold it tightly against her left ear.
Her voice came through the tiny gap in the wood clearer than it had before.
Sarah: They have no idea I took it all.
The quiet statement felt like a sharp knife digging deep into Mark's chest without warning.
He could hear the paper bills rustling softly as she shoved them inside a metal box.
Sarah: The lawyer said the inheritance paperwork was signed without any issues yesterday morning.
Mark squeezed his eyes shut for a brief second to stop his head from spinning wildly.
His late uncle had left a substantial estate to the entire family six long months ago.
Sarah had volunteered to handle all the legal documents with their family attorney to save time.
She had returned home weeks later crying and claiming the estate had no remaining cash left.
Mark had believed every single word that came out of his wife's mouth without question.
He had spent months stressing over how they would afford Toby's upcoming private school tuition.
Now he was staring at the stolen money sitting right under his own roof.
Toby tugged gently on Mark's sleeve and looked up with wide curious eyes.
Toby: Is there a monster inside the wall, Daddy?
Mark pulled his gaze away from the hole and looked into his son's innocent face.
He took a deep breath to settle his shaking hands before standing up to his feet.
His heart was racing fast with a mixture of immense betrayal and rising burning anger.
He stood up straight on the hardwood floor and pulled Toby protectively behind his back.
The quiet home he loved so much suddenly felt like a complete and utter lie.
He walked over to the adjacent bookshelf that leaned heavily against the hallway corner wall.
He noticed a small hidden latch hidden right behind a frame holding their wedding photograph.
Mark gripped the edge of the shelf tightly and pulled it open with all his strength.
