Chapter 3 of 6
A Cruel Man Attacked Her Before Realizing Who Intervened
Secrets In The Open
Mark tapped his phone screen furiously, holding the device up to his ear while glaring directly at Officer Thomas. The rain hit his black hoodie hard, soaking the expensive fabric until it clung to his shaking shoulders. He paced back and forth on the wet sidewalk, his arrogance slowly turning into nervous panic as the official gravity of the situation began to settle into his mind.
Mark: Dad! Pick up the phone right now! Some random cop is harassing me downtown!
Officer Thomas: Put the phone down on the hood of that car, son.
Mark: Shut up! My dad is going to buy this entire police department and fire you by midnight!
Officer Thomas didn't flinch or show a single trace of fear at the wealthy bully's wild legal threats. Instead, he reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small black leather notepad, turning the wet pages with calm focus. He looked directly at Mark, his dark eyes sharp and unyielding under the streetlamp's yellow glare.
Officer Thomas: Your father is Richard Sterling, correct? The head of Sterling Global Holdings?
Mark: Yeah! That's right! So you better back off right now if you want to keep your job!
Officer Thomas: Then your father is the same man who signed a massive legal settlement last month regarding domestic abuse charges, isn't he?
Mark's face went completely pale, his loud voice suddenly cutting out as if he had lost his breath. He stared at Officer Thomas in utter horror, dropping his expensive smartphone onto the wet pavement where the screen cracked instantly against the hard stone. He had no idea how a random street officer could possibly know about his family's most closely guarded secret inheritance agreement and private court battles.
Maya: What... what are you talking about, Officer?
Officer Thomas: This young man's family has been using their trust fund money to cover up his violent behavior for over three years now.
Mark: You cannot talk about that! That information is sealed by a non-disclosure agreement!
Officer Thomas: Criminal assault in a public street is not covered by any private agreement, Mark.
Maya stood frozen on her crutches, listening to the dark truth come out in the open rain. She had always felt like Mark was dangerous, but hearing that his wealthy family had paid off previous victims to protect his reputation made her stomach churn with deep disgust. She looked at Mark, seeing him now not as a powerful elite heir, but as a weak coward who hid behind his father's massive bank account whenever he hurt innocent people.
Mark: You don't have any evidence! It's my word against hers!
Officer Thomas: Look up at the building behind you, Mark.
Officer Thomas pointed toward the high corner of the federal structure, where a high-definition security camera hummed softly under its glass dome. Its small red recording light blinked steadily through the mist, capturing every single angle of the sidewalk attack from start to finish. Mark looked up at the lens, his mouth hanging open as he realized his father's money could never erase clear video footage owned by a federal court building.
