Chapter 1 of 6
A Cruel Man Attacked Her Before Realizing Who Intervened
The Attack In The Rain
The autumn rain fell hard against the concrete streets of downtown Chicago, creating shiny reflections under the yellow streetlights. Maya adjusted her grip on her aluminum crutches, her hands feeling numb from the chilly air blowing off the lake. She had broken her ankle three weeks ago in a minor car accident, making every step a slow and painful effort. All she wanted was to get home to her small apartment, lock the door, and rest her aching leg after a long shift at the local library.
Behind her, heavy footsteps echoed on the wet sidewalk, matching her slow pace. Maya glanced back nervously, her heart beating faster when she noticed a man wearing a dark black hoodie following closely behind her. It was Mark, a wealthy regular at the library who had spent the last month trying to force her to go on a date with him. Tonight, after she turned him down once again, he had followed her out into the dark storm, refusing to accept her clear answer.
Mark: You think you are too good for me, Maya?
Maya: Please leave me alone, Mark. I am going home.
Mark: We are not done talking yet!
Before Maya could turn around to face him, Mark rushed forward and shoved her shoulder with heavy force. The sudden impact knocked her off balance, sending her aluminum crutches flying onto the wet pavement with a loud metallic crash. Maya hit the hard street, sharp pain shooting through her injured ankle as cold water immediately soaked through her jeans and winter jacket. She gasped for air, scrambling backward on her hands while trying desperately to reach her fallen crutches.
Mark stepped over her with a cruel smirk, his tall shadow looming over her fragile frame under the dim light. He grabbed her left arm tightly, pulling her upward so she was trapped against the brick wall of a nearby government office building. Maya struggled against his strong grip, her boots slipping on the slick concrete as she tried to pull away from his harsh hold.
Maya: Get your hands off me!
Mark: Shut up and listen to me!
With a quick, violent motion, Mark raised his open hand and slapped Maya hard across her right cheek. The loud crack of the blow echoed off the empty street, leaving her face burning with sudden heat and sting. Tears mixed with the falling rain on her face as she clutched her swollen cheek in total terror and pain, realizing how isolated she really was on this dark street corner.
Mark: Trash! You shouldn't have rejected me tonight. There's no way out.
Maya: Why are you doing this to me?
Mark leaned in closer, his grip tightening around her wrist until her fingers went completely numb from the pressure. He thought he had total control over the situation, fully aware that no one usually walked down this quiet block during late evening rainstorms. He felt completely invincible, backed by his family's vast fortune and legal power that had protected him from consequences his whole life. But his arrogance blinded him to the heavy glass doors of the official building opening just a few feet away.
