Chapter 2 of 6
A Cruel Man Attacked Her Before Realizing Who Intervened
An Officer Steps In
The heavy glass doors of the federal building creaked open, breaking the steady rhythm of the pouring rain. A tall officer in a dark blue police uniform stepped out onto the wet sidewalk, his polished boots clicking firmly against the pavement. He had been finishing up late paperwork inside when he heard the metallic crash of the crutches and the shouting outside. His eyes quickly locked onto the dark scene unfolding near the brick wall, taking in the frightened woman on the ground and the aggressive man standing over her.
Officer Thomas moved quickly, his stride full of steady authority as he rushed toward the scene without a second of hesitation. His hand rested near his belt, ready for action as he closed the distance between them. The bright red and blue reflections from nearby building lights bounced off his silver police badge, shining brightly against his crisp chest.
Officer Thomas: Let her go!
Mark froze instantly, his fingers loosening slightly on Maya's soaked jacket as he turned his head in utter shock. He stared at the officer with wide eyes, completely unaccustomed to anyone daring to command him in such a harsh, demanding voice. Maya used that brief moment of distraction to pull her arm free, slumping safely down against the cool brick wall while cradling her injured leg.
Mark: Who are you?
Officer Thomas: Step away from her right now! Put your hands where I can see them!
Mark: Do you have any idea who my father is? My dad owns half the real estate in this city!
Officer Thomas: I do not care who your father is. You just committed a violent felony right in front of me.
Mark laughed arrogantly, wiping rain from his face while stepping backward away from Maya, though his tone remained full of spite. He squared his shoulders, trying to look imposing despite the obvious badge staring back at him. He was used to his father's expensive team of divorce lawyers and trust fund lawyers pulling him out of every legal disaster he ever created in his reckless youth.
Mark: My lawyer will have your badge before tomorrow morning if you touch me, cop.
Officer Thomas: Keep talking, kid. Every word is being recorded on my body camera right now.
Officer Thomas carefully crouched down near Maya, keeping one eye on Mark while extending a firm, steady hand to help her up. Maya looked up into the officer's face, her body shaking from a mix of freezing cold and pure shock. She reached out and grabbed his strong hand, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief wash over her broken spirit. For the first time in months, she felt like someone was actually standing between her and the cruel monster who had been tracking her every move.
Maya: He pushed me... he took my crutches away.
Officer Thomas: You are safe now, ma'am. I am not going anywhere.
Officer Thomas scooped up the fallen aluminum crutches from the dirty puddle, carefully wiping the wet handles on his dry sleeve before handing them back to her. Maya leaned heavily on the supports, her legs still trembling as she stood upright. Meanwhile, Mark stood a few feet away, pulling out his expensive smartphone with trembling fingers, frantic to call his wealthy father to fix this terrible problem before it ruined his elite social standing.
