Chapter 1 of 5
A Bitter Uncle Tripped My Daughter At Our Family Gathering
The Unwelcomed Guests Arrive Early
The morning sun cut through the heavy crimson drapes of the Harrington family mansion. Evelyn adjusted her maroon dress in the hallway mirror, her heart pounding a quick rhythm against her ribs. She took a deep breath to calm her frayed nerves before heading downstairs. Today was the annual family estate gathering, a tradition her late father had started decades ago. Her manipulative stepbrother, Julian, had taken control of the main house after their father passed away last year. Evelyn had been pushed out of the family business, forced to raise her seven-year-old daughter Lily on a modest middle-class budget. Coming back to this giant estate always made her skin crawl with deep anxiety. She knew Julian despised her presence, viewing her as a threat to his total inheritance of the vast family trust. Lily held her mother's hand tightly as they walked through the front double doors, gazing up at the high ceilings. The black and white checkered hardwood oak floors glistened under the grand crystal chandelier. Guests were already mingling near the catering tables, sipping expensive champagne and talking about stock portfolios. Evelyn squeezed Lily's small hand gently, giving her a reassuring smile to hide her inner stress.
Evelyn: Remember to stay close to me today, honey, okay?
Lily: I will, Mommy. Is Uncle Julian going to be mean to us again?
Evelyn: Just ignore him, sweetheart. We are here to see Grandma Rose and honor your grandfather's memory.
Julian stood near the fireplace, wearing a tailored blue suit with polished gold cufflinks. He held a glass of scotch, watching Evelyn and Lily enter with an obvious look of utter disgust. He leaned over to his corporate lawyer, whispering something malicious before walking directly toward his sister. The heavy thud of his designer shoes echoed across the marble entryway as the surrounding conversations began to quiet down. Relatives knew the intense rivalry between the two siblings over the pending court litigation regarding the estate distribution. Julian paused a few feet away, swirling his drink with arrogant confidence as he looked down at his niece. Evelyn shifted her body slightly, placing herself between Julian and her innocent young daughter.
Julian: I see you actually showed up, Evelyn. I thought my legal team made our position clear.
Evelyn: This is my father's home too, Julian. Lily has every right to be here today.
Julian: This house belongs to the head of the company. You are just a guest leeching off our name.
Evelyn: We are not going to argue in front of everyone. Step aside, Julian.
Grandma Rose walked over, her silver dress swishing softly as she held a velvet jewelry box. Her face was lined with age and deep worry, tired of the constant fighting that had ruined the family. She smiled warmly at Lily, ignoring Julian's dark posture completely as she reached out her thin arms. Lily broke away from her mother's side, running happily toward her grandmother with open arms. Julian sneered, sticking his polished dress shoe out right into the little girl's path without a second thought. Lily tripped hard over his leather shoe, flying forward and crashing loudly onto the hard oak floor. The heavy thud echoed through the silent grand hall, followed by instant gasps from the surrounding family guests.
