Within less than an hour, two police cars pulled up the long driveway of Sterling Manor. Their red and blue lights flashed softly against the white stone walls of the mansion. The officers walked inside and reviewed the clear digital footage from the balcony security system. They saw Evelyn unlock the latch, place the toy, and then stand back while Maya almost dropped to her death.

The officers placed iron handcuffs around Evelyn's wrists right in the middle of the grand foyer. She wept loudly, begging my father to forgive her and drop the charges. But Dad just stood there silently, holding Maya safely in his arms while I stood right beside him.

The officers led Evelyn out the big front doors, and the police cars drove away down the long driveway. The heavy iron gates closed behind them with a loud, final click. The scary cloud that had hovered over our house for three years seemed to lift away all at once. The house felt warm and quiet again, just like it used to be before Evelyn ever moved in.

Dad carried Maya out to the back patio, and we all sat together on the sofa near the pool. The sun was warm against our skin, and the water in the pool was completely still again. Dad looked at me with immense pride in his eyes and pulled me into a tight embrace.

Richard: You were so brave today, Leo. You saved your sister's life with your quick thinking.

Leo: I just held her hand as tight as I could, Dad. Just like you taught me.

Richard: We are a family, and we protect each other no matter what happens. Tomorrow, we sign those trust fund papers to make sure you kids are safe forever.

Maya: Can we stay by the pool and play with my bunny now, Daddy?

Richard: Yes, baby. We have all the time in the world.

Dad smiled warmly, the happiest I had seen him in years. We had lost a toxic person who tried to destroy us, but our family bond was stronger than ever before.
